I put the new Alvin and the Chipmunks movie into my DVD player this morning out of morbid curiosity and because Fox sent me the DVD to review. It was everything I had hoped for and more. Or maybe not.
I grew up watching the cartoon show as a child, and despite the CGI-animated chipmunks and Jason Lee once again selling out to family audiences, I wanted to see the film. Okay, maybe “had to watch” is a bit extreme, but I definitely wanted to see how badly Fox botched up a childhood classic. In this version, the three chipmunks, who are now electronic rather than animated, move in with struggling songwriter Dave and write a popular Christmas song. They get fame and success, but at what cost?
Alvin and the Chipmunks is a solid, albeit uninspired, film. As the chipmunks run riot in Dave’s house, the film contains enough funny antics to appeal to young audiences. Aside from visual humor, there isn’t much else to the film. The wheels fall out from under the bus as the film shifts gears and concentrate on the chipmunks as rock stars. Tim Hill’s direction of Alvin and the Chipmunks is clumsy at times. Following the opening introduction sequences in which Dave is suffering in his current employment, the film abruptly shifts gears to keep things going. Instead of focusing on the Chipmunks’ ascent to stardom, Hill bestows it on them right away. Unfortunately, once they become renowned, there is only one way for the film to go, and it goes down. The film fails to establish any fascinating subplots, such as Dave and Claire’s romance.
The main issue with Alvin and the Chipmunks is that they never try to be funny. After all, the film is about three high-pitched chipmunks who can sing and communicate. Why not take advantage of this and engage in some awkward human interactions? Why not keep the movie focused on Dave’s efforts to encourage the chipmunks to behave? Why not let the chipmunks go on an adventure or deal with a larger problem? Alvin and the Chipmunks take the easy, bland, and safe road, never attempting to be exceptionally entertaining or noteworthy.
Alvin and the Chipmunks is a nice little comedy with some silly moments for tiny kids, but for the rest of us, this film might have been a lot more amusing with some subtle changes to the screenplay. It’s not the disaster I was expecting, but it might have been much better.
About the quiz
Three singing chipmunks achieve success in the music world, but when an unscrupulous music executive tries to exploit them, they must return home to their friends. Alvin, Simon, and Theodore are three gentle chipmunks that live a blissful existence… until their tree is felled and transported to the large city of Los Angeles.
They encounter Dave Seville, a down-on-his-luck composer who was rejected by his old best friend, big shot record boss Ian Hawke. They follow him, and Dave enters the room to find everyone singing in perfect harmony. Dave sees money and strikes a deal: he will let them dwell in his house if they sing his tunes.
This deal gets off to a bad start when Chipmunks mistakenly ruin both his love life and his profession. Feeling terrible, they try to make things right by bringing him back into Ian’s good graces. When Ian hears them sing, he, too, sees financial signs and signs them to a contract, as well as re-signing Dave to the label. Their songs are an instant hit, and the Chipmunks fly to fame and money.
