Obi-Wan’s relationship with the Jedi Order and his master, Qui-Gon Jinn, has been rocky in both canon and Legends. The canon novel Master & Apprentice depicts Obi-Wan clashing with his teacher over their opposing views on the Jedi way of life, as Qui-Gon has the opportunity to join the Jedi Council and leave their partnership behind, but their relationship endures when it matters most. The story of Obi-Wan and Darth Maul’s rivalry grew as The Clone Wars animated series expanded the Star Wars story onscreen beyond the film saga. Dave Filoni, the show’s supervising director, had this to say about the two clashing again decades after The Phantom Menace:
“Obi-Wan has matured as a character to the point where he knows he could dispatch Maul, or Maul could dispatch him, but to what extent?” Obi-Wan is approaching the point of becoming completely selfless.”

During the Clone Wars, the Jedi Council’s plans posed one of the first challenges to Anakin Skywalker and Obi-friendship. Wan’s Obi-Wan fakes his own death and goes undercover as a scoundrel to foil a bounty hunter’s plan. To keep Obi-Wan’s mission hidden, Anakin Skywalker and his apprentice, Ahsoka Tano, must both believe Obi-Wan is truly dead. As seen in The Clone Wars, Anakin is enraged with Obi-Wan when the truth is finally revealed, and it is possible that this is when the cracks in the trust that underpins their friendship begin to form.

When Luke wakes up the next morning at home, he has no recollection of the incident, implying that Obi-Wan used a Jedi mind trick to erase his memory.
