According to a new study from the University of Warwick, there is a clear correlation between sleep patterns and personality, and a specific set of personality attributes fits the morning person type.

The publication, ‘Personality Traits Relate to Chronotype at Both the Phenotypic and Genetic Level,’ was just published in the ‘Journal of Personality by researchers from the University of Warwick and colleagues from the University of Tartu.

The researchers revealed a correlation between different personality hierarchies, sleep patterns, and even genetics.

A typical morning person is someone who naturally wakes up around 6 a.m., goes for a jog, showers, eats breakfast, and is ready for a productive day at work by 9 a.m. An evening person finds it difficult to get out of bed in the morning and feels more productive in the evening.

The researchers examined the association between sleep time (chronotype), preference for morning/evening sleep, and personality factors on a phenotypic and genetic level in the study. Also, you must try to play this Are You A Morning Or Night Person Quiz.

Finally, the researchers discovered that the association between personality and morningness-eveningness is caused in part by hereditary variables.

Using a large sample of participants from the Estonian Biobank, researchers asked them to fill out questionnaires regarding their sleep schedules and personalities. Personality was also appraised by someone who knew the participant well. Researchers were able to discover the phenotypic correlations between sleep and personality once the questions were answered.

They were, nevertheless, able to calculate genetic associations using summary data from big genome-wide association studies of personality and sleep preferences.

Personalities can be separated into three hierarchies: personality domains, facets, and items. Researchers examined all three but found that those with high Conscientiousness and low Openness were connected with being earlier chronotypes on a domain level (i.e., they went to bed and got out of bed earlier).

Researchers discovered that those who were less direct (a facet of Agreeableness) and more excitement-seeking (a component of Extraversion), but more self-disciplined (a facet of Conscientiousness) were more likely to have earlier chronotypes. Higher Conscientiousness and lower Openness were also linked to a preference for mornings.

About the quiz

Dr. Anita Lenneis, a postgraduate researcher at the University of Warwick’s Department of Psychology, remarked, “Our findings have led us to two probable avenues for how personality influences chronotype. Personality traits such as Conscientiousness and C5: Self-discipline, in particular, may influence chronotype by shaping people’s preferences for various social activities and behaviors, which in turn may influence what time people go to and get out of bed. Another way personality may influence chronotype is through active decisions people make about their sleep.”

“It is also possible that chronotype influences personality or that chronotype and personality influence one other. The findings of the genetic correlations corroborate this viewpoint, but more research is needed to better understand the shared genetic pathways of the two constructs as well as the causation of their links “Dr. Lenneis continued.

“Not only have we shown that there is a relationship between chronotype, personality, and partially your genes,” said Professor Anu Realo of the University of Warwick, “but our findings also suggest that it might be possible to change your chronotype or at least train yourself into a different more socially convenient sleep pattern by increasing your self-control.”
