When Matt Meese, Whitney Call, Mallory Everton, Jason Gray, Adam Berg, Stacey Harkey, Natalie Madsen, Stephen Meek, James Perry, and Jeremy Warner joined BYU’s comedy group from 2007 to 2011, they had no idea that their amusing hobby would eventually turn into a lucrative comedic career.

Beginnings that are “divine”
“Acting was the first thing I ever wanted to do as a kid,” says Studio C’s head writer and actor, Matt Meese. “[My parents] encouraged it, but it was always, ‘You know, you can do this on the side and have a real career,'” she says. Meese, his parents, and the other nine Studio C cast members had no idea that their humble origins as members of BYU’s Divine Comedy group would gain them a place in the spotlight.

“I definitely needed the most convincing to say, ‘Yeah, I should do this,’ but once I decided, no one could tell me otherwise!” Meese discusses the possibility of converting their humor into a television show. And it was that determination that got the ball rolling. Also, you must try to play this Which Studio C Character Are You Quiz.

Meese introduced the idea of a 30-minute sketch comedy program to BYUtv producer Jared Shores more than three years ago, who liked the idea and set things in action after a little more convincing from Meese. Studio C, named after the studio where they first began taping at the BYU Broadcasting Center, immediately gained traction. By Season 5, the main cast of four (Meese, Everton, Gray, and Call) had grown to include Berg, Harkey, Madsen, Meek, Perry, and Warner, as well as Berg, Harkey, Madsen, Meek, Perry, and Warner.

The Studio C cast members, on the other hand, never expected to go down this road. Perry began his career as a software engineer, Harkey as a public relations major, and Gray as a dental student. They all came on board when the possibility to produce and star in a television show arose. “I guess you kind of fall into everything you get to do,” Warner says, “but you choose to fall into it.”

“We were fortunate with the time,” Meese continues. “This was something everyone had always wanted to do—we just happened to be in the right place at the right time.”

Today, Studio C has gathered a sizable following and expanded its reach. It is consistently the most-watched show on its network, with approximately 40 million views per month on YouTube and the BYUtv digital platforms combined. The incredible saves by goalie “Scott Sterling” reverberated with soccer fans all around the world, and the video became the group’s first to exceed 1 million views on YouTube in late 2014.

About the quiz

Studio C’s YouTube account now has over 1 million followers, and the “Scott Sterling” video has received over 46 million views. Studio C continues to achieve its original goal of going out outside the LDS community to create clean humor for families all over the world, thanks to its entertaining personalities and various topics.

That effect can be observed in Harkey’s own family, where his Baptist father is eager to share his son’s work. “One thing we love is that everybody who likes clean comedy loves the show,” Harkey says. So, whether it’s family-friendly, something you can watch with everyone or something that corresponds with your religion, everybody can watch and appreciate it.”

However, the cast is still cognizant of its LDS fans. Everton and Madsen, for example, recently enjoyed chatting with Sheri Dew at Deseret Book’s Time Out for Women and Time Out for Girls events.

They addressed relevant subjects for young women in the midst of a conversation about being a woman in the workplace. “We talked about being yourself and self-esteem, as well as how to deal with criticism and mean individuals online,” Madsen explains. “We [deal with it] at work, but young people are coping with it as well.”

The good impact of Studio C has even piqued the interest of Church officials, with President Uchtdorf stopping by with his wife to witness a rehearsal in 2014.
