The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has four levels of college football, but the one that matters the most in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). The Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), Division II, and Division III are the other three tiers if you’re score at home.

The FBS has 124 teams grouped into 11 leagues; Notre Dame, Brigham Young University, Army, and Navy are the only four schools not associated with a conference. Six of those 11 conferences are regarded majors: the Southeastern Conference, the Big XII, the Big 10, the Pac-12, the Big East, and the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Editor’s Picks

The Southeastern Conference, or SEC, is primarily made up of public universities from the old Confederacy. Because a member institution has won the national title in each of the last six seasons, it has earned the reputation of being the greatest football conference in the country. The Big XII is predominantly based in the Great Plains and Texas, with the Sooners of Oklahoma and the Longhorns of Texas serving as historic powers. The league, while still a power, has lost four members to other conferences in the last two years while adding only two, explaining the disparity between the conference’s name and membership.

The Big 10, the country’s oldest league, is dominated by huge land-grant colleges from the upper Midwest, with Ohio State, Michigan, Nebraska, and Penn State among the top programs. The Big 10 Conference has been recognized as such since 1917, and the moniker has been retained despite the addition of Penn State in 1993 and Nebraska in 2011.

The Pac-12 Conference is made up of colleges from the Pacific coast and the Rocky Mountains, with Southern California, Oregon, and Stanford leading the way. The Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) spans from Boston College in the north to Miami in the south, with Miami, Virginia Tech, and Florida State claiming first place. Finally, the Big East, which will eventually include teams from as far away as San Diego, was once the home of the major college programs along the east coast. Due to recent defections, it is now only a significant conference in the name.

In the Bowl Championship Series era, which began in 1998 when these six conferences and Notre Dame established an alliance to produce a real national champion, no school from outside of these six conferences has ever played for the national championship.

About the quiz

How is a champion chosen?
Every team’s goal is to finish the regular season first or second in the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) rankings and so be selected to play in the BCS National Championship Game.

During the regular season, clubs play the majority of their games against other conference members (the Big XII and Pac-12 play nine conference games each season, while the ACC, SEC, and Big 10 play eight). Teams in the Big East, which has only eight football teams, can only play seven games against their league opponents.)

A conference champion is crowned at the end of each regular season. The Pac-12, Big Ten, SEC, and ACC crown their champions in a winner-take-all league championship game. The Big XII and Big East titles are awarded to the team having the best record in intra-conference regular-season games.

The six conference champions, as well as four additional teams chose primarily but not exclusively from the six major leagues, are invited to compete in the five BCS bowl games, which include the Orange Bowl in Miami, the Fiesta Bowl in the Phoenix area, the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans, the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, and the BCS National Championship Game, which is played in one of the four other major bowl games on a rotating basis. The top two teams in the BCS standings are invited to participate in the BCS Championship game, with the winner crowned BCS champion.
