World of Warcraft lore features a universe origin story, in a classic high fantasy manner. It all began with the Titans. These godlike creatures spent most of their lives as slumbering world-souls. They sought out more of their own kind after awakening, while also constructing worlds and upholding order.
They had no idea that the malevolent Old Gods were plotting to corrupt the slumbering Titan world-souls. When the Titan Sargeras uncovered the first corrupted world-soul, he made the unheroic decision to slaughter it, killing the innocent Titan in the process. It was an activity that his teammates did not approve of.
Unable to persuade the others that a world without life was preferable to a world with corrupted life, Sargeras went rogue, assembled an army of Demons, and launched the Burning Crusade, an attempt to purify the cosmos of all living things.
Meanwhile, the Titans discovered Azeroth’s world-soul (yes, the main map). The Old Gods had corrupted it, but they could yet save it. Because the Titans were unable to eliminate the Old Gods without destroying the earth, they chose the next best option: imprisoning them.
The Titans raced over to Sargeras, happy with their work, to bring him the good news: the world-souls might be salvaged without destroying all life. Unfortunately, Sargeras had no intention of returning to the good side, and a war ensued. To cut a long story short, Sargeras won.
Which WOW character are you?
Sargeras, fortunately for Azeroth, did not know how to get there. Everything on the globe was pleasant and peaceful, with everyone busy developing their world, inventing things, and wielding magic. However, that use of magic revealed the planet’s location to Sargeras, who subsequently tricked the elven queen Azshara into establishing a gateway using the magical Well of Eternity. Marian and Illidan Stormrage, night elf brothers addicted to the power of the Well, set out to stop Azshara. When Malfurian decided that the Well must be destroyed in order to rescue Azeroth, Illidan betrayed his brother. Finally, the Well of Eternity imploded, leaving behind the Maelstrom. Despite the massive catastrophe, Azeroth was saved.
Sargeras, our main antagonist, needed a larger army, so he went to the planet Argus to recruit the three leaders of the native Eredar race. Only one of them, Velen, declined the deal and fled to Draenor. His people were dubbed ‘Draenei,’ or exiles.
About the quiz
Following the disastrous invasion of Azeroth, Velen’s former colleague Kil’jaeden (now a servant of Sargeras) proceeded to Draenor and devised the clever but terrible scheme to corrupt the native, harmless Orcs. Sargeras’ Burning Legion enslaved the Orcs, who went full medieval on the Draenei. As a result, the Horde was born. The fragile truce that once held all of the races’ animosity at bay has crumbled. The regions of Azeroth have once again been the setting for a World of Warcraft game.
