During the autumn season, I spend a lot of time looking for new scares. I’m impervious to haunted houses and horror films since neither forces me to leave my comfort zone. I know that movies will progress without my intervention; even if I recline a little on my seat, the action will continue, and I will be able to fully enjoy the experience. With the exception of a few “intensified” experiences, ghouls have little power over me, and the scares are predictable. I can turn a corner and, oh my goodness! It’s… a guy in a costume with some pretty good makeup.
When I play scary video games, I often feel the same way. I’m not bothered by gore, and monsters are a thing of the past. I’ve already seen my fair share of Resident Evil 7 Let’s Plays and haven’t felt anything in my stomach. I always know, like I do with haunted houses and horror films, that none of the scares are real.
But, of all things, a romance visual novel recently terrified me – simply by entirely defying my expectations. It took advantage of my trust in the visual novel genre and converted it into its own twisted game. My nightmares learned new tricks as a result of it. Which DDLC character are you?
Doki Doki Literature Club, despite its appearance, is a free-to-play psychological horror game created by independent studio Team Salvato. The game has gained a reputation as an inventive fright since its release. It’s a gradual burn that starts with you and a group of attractive girls proving that your reading club is worthy of becoming an official school organization. Of course, your protagonist hopes to develop new relationships with some of them along the way. The game encourages you to choose a girl for whom you want to write a poem and depending on your choices, you may get closer to the club’s charming, gentle members.

Doki Doki Literature Club eventually leads you down a dark path, culminating in the shocking and dramatic death of one character, true to the game’s advertising content warnings (which you should take seriously, by the way). But, at the same time that it rips your heart out, the game takes a much more bizarre turn.
When the initial gameplay ends and the main menu reloads, the image of the deceased character is distorted and deformed, as if her death had an effect on the game client itself. The save files are rendered unavailable, forcing the player to restart the game. If and when the player proceeds to begin this new file, the game appears to respond to any resemblance to the previous character, and the client loudly glitches and morphs until it appears satisfied with its output.
About the quiz
Monika is seated across from the protagonist in what remains of the literary club classroom. Monika admits that she is a self-aware video game character, having gained consciousness and the capacity to modify the game’s coding. Disgusted by the fact that she is not a romance choice but only a bystander, she used her power to accentuate her clubmates’ negative attributes in an attempt to make them unlikable and prevent their confessions of love to the protagonist, only for them to become more determined.
She then declares her own love to the player rather than the protagonist, owing to the fact that they are genuine and autonomous rather than programmed. Monika will sit and converse with the player about various things indefinitely unless the player enters the game’s directory and deletes Monika’s character file. Monika lashes out at the player as she vanishes, but eventually forgives them and repents by restoring the game and the characters, excluding herself.
