Wings Of Fire Summary

The characters in this book are dragons, and a war between dragon tribes rages in the realm of Pyrrhia. According to prophesy, the bloodshed will end only when five exceptional dragonets, or young dragons, are born and trained to put an end to the battle.

The Talons of Peace, a troop of dragoons, wants to fulfill the prophecy by collecting five rare eggs born on the brightest night. The dragonets must be from the SeaWings, NightWings, SkyWings, MudWings, and SandWings tribes. However, one of the warring queens purposefully smashes the SkyWing egg, forcing the dragonet caretakers to rethink their plans at the last minute. Despite the fact that it is outside of the prophecy, they swiftly substitute a RainWing egg.

Editor’s Picks

Six years later, the story picks up and is narrated through the eyes of a dragonet named Clay. Tsunami, Sunny, Starflight, and Glory (the RainWing dragonet) reside beneath a mountain with him. They are being cared for and trained by Talons of Peace supporters, dragons named Kestrel, Dune, and Webs. When the dragonets decide to flee their cave, Scarlet, the vicious SkyWing queen, captures them and their guardians. Scarlet forces her prisoners to compete in an arena. She throws them against her champion, Peril, a dragon whose mere touch burns others on fire. Peril and Clay become friends despite their difficult circumstances. The dragonets attempt multiple failed escapes. Scarlet charges Kestrel and Peril discovers Kestrel is her mother. Burn, one of the SandWings’ contenders for a queen, pays Scarlet a visit. The dragonets are even more eager to go when they realize Scarlet intends to offer Sunny to Burn as a gift. Queen Scarlet entertains her guests by pitting some of the dragonets against one another in the arena. When the excitement isn’t enough for her, she teams up with Clay and Peril to battle. They fight, attempting to figure out how to avoid killing each other. Glory assaults Scarlet with her potent poison at a key juncture. With Peril’s assistance, the dragonets flee. They encourage Peril to join them, but she feels she needs to work on herself first before becoming the dragon of her destiny.

Clay and Glory decide to look for Clay’s parents. They track down his mother, a jaded dragon who sold her egg since she didn’t need it. Clay is upset that his mother does not want to know him, but he is delighted to see his siblings. Clay realizes that in order to fulfill his destiny, he must be himself, care for his friends, and find a method to fulfill the prophecy.

About the quiz

For decades, the seven dragon tribes have been at odds, embroiled in a never-ending conflict over an ancient, hidden treasure. The Talons of Peace, a covert movement, is determined to put a stop to the fighting with the help of a prophecy – a foretelling that requires enormous sacrifice. To fulfill the prophecy, five dragonets are gathered, raised in a subterranean cave, and enlisted against their will to end the horrible battle. However, not every dragonet desires a destiny. And when the chosen five escape their underground imprisonment in search of their native homes, what is unleashed on the dragon world may be far more than the revolutionary planners expected…

Thoughts: I enjoyed this book a lot. I particularly like the scene in which Clay (the main character) became frothy and stung by the water. That was incredibly funny and well written, in my opinion. The peril was probably my favorite character since the author, Tui T. Sutherland, gave her a good sense of humor and made her into what you’d expect a dragon to be. She’s amusing, but serious when she has to be. What I liked best about this novel was how the author used history and folklore to bring this story to life. Sutherland, for example, created all of the things that humans do with dragons instead of humans. Also, people are usually under the impression that they are superhuman, yet in this novel, humans are weak and dragons are powerful. It was amusing how everything was almost turned around. I would recommend this book to children aged 7 to 12, both males and girls. This book was fantastic!
