In this world, there are two types of people: those who have completed a Dark Souls game and those who have not. These FromSoftware titles are famously difficult, frequently crushing players with an atmosphere as terrible as its bosses. However, for every death, there is always a cause to try again, no matter how pointless it may appear. Hidetaka Miyazaki’s games always challenge you to get back up stronger than before whenever you want to “git gud.”

In Dark Souls, a lot of things happen before you ever touch the controller. There was nothing but fog for ages until you escaped the Undead Asylum. Nobody lived and no one died. A magical fire known as the First Flame erupted underground, attracting a slew of humanoid species. This fabled Flame generated the dichotomies of light and darkness, as well as life and death. It essentially set time in motion. Three animals entered the Flame in search of a Lord Soul. The Lord Soul of Light was taken by Gwyn, while the Soul of Life was taken by the Witch of Izalith. Nito claimed ownership of the Soul of Death. This bestowed enormous power onto them, transforming them into living gods.
Meanwhile, the evasive Pygmy discovered the Dark Soul, which provided Hollows with a valuable commodity known as Humanity. Humans were thus born into this world, but their power was dwarfed by the three Lords.
I recall sitting with a friend over a few beers, attempting to do what every single Dark Souls player has done at some point: persuade the uninitiated that it is the best game of the last decade. This particular friend, though, was not completely uninitiated. He’d gotten as far as the Taurus Demon before coming to a halt. “It’s simply not my type of thing,” he explained. “I enjoy games with interesting plots.”
Naturally, this irritated me, not just because I have a mania for converting others (as do most Souls fans I know), but also because Dark Souls has a great tale, one of the best, most engaging, most complicated, and intellectually involving stories in all of the video games. It simply does everything in its power to keep it hidden from you.
About the quiz
It is entirely feasible to play through Dark Souls in its entirety and have no idea what occurred. This is not a source of embarrassment. The plot of Dark Souls took months, if not years, to unravel. It took a lot of digging. This is because experiencing Dark Souls’ tale is not a passive experience; it is not told to you. Instead, you must seek it out. You must look for hints in item descriptions, short snippets of speech, your surroundings, the forms, lairs, and implied histories of the bosses you confront, and in the game’s only narrative cutscene (the prologue). And it’s been a collaborative effort: the tale of Dark Souls has been unearthed over years by thousands of different players, each contributing their observations, deductions, and, of course, wild supposition.
Even years later, there are still portions of Dark Souls’ tale that we can’t figure out. Some of the unanswered questions concerning Lordran’s past were solved in the Artorias of the Abyss narrative, but many remain. Many questions remain unanswered, such as the true identity of the Furtive Pygmy, a figure mentioned only once, in the game’s prologue. (The common opinion is that he and Manus – the adversary of the Artorias of the Abyss segment of the story – are the same person, although as with most things in Dark Souls, nothing is certain.) Many of the accepted assumptions concerning Lordran’s and its residents’ backstories are simply conventional wisdom; there’s excellent evidence, but we don’t know for sure.
