Yasujiro Ozu created one of the greatest films of all time with only a few of these ingredients. ‘Tokyo Story’ (1953) is devoid of emotive impulses and artificial feeling. Local reviewers ranked it the best film ever produced in Japan in 2009, barely ahead of Seven Samurai (1954).
Then, Tokyo Tale’s recurrent presence on such lists is puzzling, given how unassuming the story and its telling are. Also, Shukichi and Tomi, an elderly couple, make their first trip to Tokyo from their seaside hometown of Onomichi to visit their two eldest children, Koichi, a doctor, and Shige, a beauty salon owner.
As their presence is shuttled between the homes of their unwelcoming children, who appear too engrossed with their own lives to even acknowledge them, they are met with an air of apathy. Noriko, their widowed daughter-in-law, who lives alone after their middle son Shoji was killed in the war, is the only family member ready to spend time with them.
