Bergman’s winter of 1956-1957 was one of intense and productive work. The Seventh Seal was the focus of the summer, followed by Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Erik XIV, and Peer Gynt at the Malmö City Theatre. His general health, on the other hand, was not good. The script for Wild Strawberries was written during his approximately two-month stay at Stockholm’s Karolinska University Hospital, where he had been sent for “general observation and treatment.”

His grandmother’s house on Trädgrdsgatan in Uppsala was where he stopped on his way to Dalarna in 1956, according to a 1960s interview. Lalla had opened the door so many times before that he couldn’t help but picture what would happen if she did it again.

In the future, he would modify the origin tale. ‘That’s a lie,’ he writes in Images: My Life in Film. In spite of the fact that he was eternally living in his boyhood, he began working on the script during his hospital stay in 1957. Sture Helander, Bergman’s doctor at Karolinska, invited Ingmar to attend his psychosomatic classes.

Isak’s sister Charlotta, played by Gunnel Lindblom, was Helander’s wife. Since the screenplay was finalized on May 31 and filming began on July 2, it appears that casting and other preparations have moved along at a rapid pace. Most likely, the fact that many of the actors were from Malmö City Theatre contributed to the success of the production.

As for Bergman, it’s probably certainly because of the “gloomy Swede” label. Despite the absurdity, there is just enough truth in it to make one sympathize. A spider was his vision of God in Through A Glass Darkly, after all. Fanny and Alexander, his last major film, is hardly sad. Also, you must try to play this Wild Strawberries quiz.

Wild Strawberries (1957), on the other hand, is the picture that I return to over and over again because of its compassionate view of life, which best portrays Bergman’s more hopeful side.

Isak Borg, 76, an accomplished medical expert, goes with his daughter-in-law from Stockholm to Lund to receive an honorary doctorate. The old man recounts his history as he drives 400 miles in his car. He thinks of the girl he loved who married his brother instead, and his own miserably failed marriage. While everyone admires his friendly exterior, he recognizes that there is something inwardly arid and remote.

About the quiz

There is a dream sequence that appears early on in the film. Borg arrives in a house in Stockholm’s old area with boarded-up windows. An entire coffin falls out of it when one of its wheels becomes trapped on a lamppost. The corpse within tries to lure Borg in with its outstretched hand. Isak’s sister Charlotta, played by Gunnel Lindblom, was Helander’s wife.

The two men arguing furiously about God and the woman (Bibi Andersson) they’re both after. Between them, she deflates their arguments with her youthful insolence, adding an air of frivolity to the film’s philosophical discussion.

As well, Andersson portrays Sara, Victor’s unrequited love from his boyhood. Their moods range from sad to nostalgic to slightly ominous (one image shows a baby’s cradle in the woodland).

Bergman’s agile camera and Sjostrom’s improvisational skills are equally important in this regard. In many scenes, Sjostrom shows the shift from one to the other. A performance of extraordinary sensitivity for a silent film legend. Bergman and Sjostrom have succeeded in making us feel sympathy for Victor at the end of Wild Strawberries. This man, now an adult, is trying to find solace in his childhood recollections.
