If you don’t know that “Klaus” is Santa Claus’ origin myth, it’s definitely more fun. In light of the title, trailers, and other aspects of the project, this is nearly unfathomable, but you take your pleasures where you can. In Jesper, Jason Schwartzman voices the spoilt descendant of a politically influential family.
The academy assigns Jesper to Smeerensburg, a remote island town that hasn’t sent or received mail in years and is racked by a clandestine civil war in which citizens destroy each other’s property in wild, ridiculous ways that evoke old Looney Tunes shorts, as a last-ditch effort to make him care about, well, anything. Schwartzman is charming as the layabout Jesper, a soft, craven, but ultimately nice hustler who talks and looks like David Spade’s character in “The Emperor’s New Groove.”
Slapstick bits are thrown at Jesper by director/co-writer Sergio Pablos in a chaotic, humiliating fashion. Considering what a brat the character is, these scenes are inventively arranged and rather enjoyable. An animated film that doesn’t shy away from sight gags and bleakly humorous dialogue is a welcome change from the conventional big-studio animated feature, which focuses on sensitivity above all else.

Kids insult Jesper as they speed down a hill, and even the hero is unsure of how to react. Jen’s jaw drops when he views Smeerensburg through curtains of slate-colored mist, which reveal a silhouetted whorl of dilapidated buildings piled atop jagged slopes in front of him. An uninspiring panorama, devoid of color and suggestive of an old, decaying machine, directs the viewer’s attention to a little circle of sunlight in the upper left corner of the frame. ferryman says, “That’s really cool, huh? ” “Well, you’ll have to wait till spring to see it.”
Because of this, they stationed him on a cold island, above the Arctic Circle, where the feuding locals almost ever exchange words, let alone letters. Alva, the local teacher, becomes his ally. Despite their differences, they are able to work together to make Smeerensburg a happier place to live. Also, you must try to play this Klaus quiz.
Jesper Johansson (Jason Schwartzman) is the privileged son of a wealthy Postmaster General in Klaus, a hand-drawn animated Christmas film. When his father has tried to push Jesper, Jesper has sabotaged his efforts. Hoping to become affluent and lazy and never have to work again. To instill character in Jesper, his father sends him to Smeerensburg. A remote island village, to establish and operate a post office. Jesper’s father challenges him to send 6,000 letters in a year.

sarcastic ferryman Mogens takes Jesper to the island (Norm Macdonald). Jesper finds himself in the middle of a deadly feud between two feuding families, the Ellingboes and the Krums, commanded by Tammy Krum (Will Sasso) (Joan Cusack). Because of Ellingboe and Krum’s feud, everyone in town is angry and bitter.
If you focus too much on the reasons, you’ll lose the sense of amazement. Too much emphasis on whether or not people should believe in Santa puts you in a quasi-theological corner, and you’ll never get out.
“Klaus” avoids both of these pitfalls, constructing a how-it-all-began narrative with storybook graphics and genuine bursts of real emotion. With holiday magic, it’s much more successful than with character-driven comedy.
it’s still possible for young audiences (and their parents) to make this an annual ritual.
The film isn’t based on Grant Morrison and Dan Mora’s popular graphic novel of the same name, but with a postman and schoolteacher as its main protagonists, it’s hard not to envision Zach Lewis and Jim Mahoney drawing influence from Rankin-Bass’ 1970 TV classic “Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town.”
