Carol Reed’s “The Third Man” is one of the few films in which the music completely complements the action. In a Vienna beerhouse one night, Reed heard Anton Karas playing the zither. A whistling sound in the dark. After it establishes the mood, the action unfolds in an amusing manner but with sinister overtones.
a spoken prologue introduces the tale (“I never knew the old Vienna, before the war. . .”). France, the United States, Great Britain, and Russia have each established zones within the broken postwar city, each with its own cadre of suspicious officials. The American author Holly Martins (Joseph Cotton) slips into this pit of intrigue. Harry Lime, a friend from college, invited him to come. Upon his arrival, Martins finds that Lime has been buried in Vienna.
What happened to Lime when she died? Martins’ journey into the muck Lime leaves behind is driven by this question. As the British officer in charge, Calloway (Trevor Howard), Holly is advised to catch the next train home by Calloway. Holly sees Anna (Alida Valli) at Lime’s grave and wonders whether she has any answers. Although Holly’s trusting Yankee heart is no match for her defenses, it’s clear that he has fallen in love with her.

In 1949, those who had personally experienced the devastation of Europe filmed the film “The Third Man.” As a wartime documentarian, Carol Reed worked for the British Army’s wartime documentary section. As a spy, Graham Greene also authored screenplays for films. His American producer, David O. Selznick, demanded that the film be shot on sets, have a peppy score, and star Noel Coward as Harry Lime.
Graham Greene wrote a novella before writing the screenplay for The Third Man, in which he sketched out the narrative and setting in greater depth. Also, as the title suggests, the thriller takes place in post-war Vienna Storyteller Major Calloway presents a crime yarn that involves penicillin on the black market, interwoven with a mystery; writer Rollo Martins hears of the murder of his friend Harry Lime, who had given him a job in a charity. He breaks down and weeps at the funeral. When he hears that a third man was there at the incident, he becomes suspicious and enlists the help of Lime’s girlfriend, Anna Schmidt.
About the quiz
Her visa status being at risk, Schmidt seeks to avoid calling attention to herself while helping Martins investigate Lime’s death. Martins, who has been drinking for a few days, shows up at Schmidt’s flat one night after the investigation has begun. Her feelings for him initially disappoint him, but then, seemingly out of nowhere, she begins to fall for him.
For U.S. viewers, Carol Reed changed the film’s finale from Graham Greene’s original.
Greene (a novelist and former spy well known at the time for his 1938 novel Brighton Rock, which was adapted into an outstanding picture in 1947 starring Richard Attenborough) first wrote the narrative as a novella before converting it to a screenplay.
Holly (or Rollo) and Anna would be reconciled in Greene’s version of events, whereas Reed, as well as David O. Selznick, a noted proponent of happy endings, argued that Anna should abandon Holly. Reed, though, was not able to have his way in all situations. To make Holly more heroic and less of an alcoholic, Selznick eliminated the introductory narration (played by the director himself) and edited eleven minutes of scenes.
The original choice for Holly Martins was James Stewart, but the film’s producer, David O. Selznick, insisted on choosing Joseph Cotten.
