On the hot seat of the Indian version of the popular game show Who Would Be a Millionaire, Jamal Malik is a young man from Mumbai’s slums. And if that’s not enough, it’s a teensy question away from the big award of 20 million rupees – around US$436,000 at the time.
Yeah. For everyone, this is a bit of a shift… But life is changing in particular from one man who grew up in some of the world’s most known slums.
However, after being detained by the police on charges of cheating, Jamal tells his story of life, revealing how he knew the answer to every issue he had confronting.
We learn that at an early age Jamal and his older brother Salim had to scrape, yet could still survive in the slums! They encounter Latika, a female who joins a trio, Jamal and Salim’s third musketeer. Soon the gangster Mom, who makes her beg and sing for money, captures them. Jamal decided to try to find Latika after spending some years on the road with Salim. He succeeds with the assistance of his brother, and he escapes the three together when Salim murders his mother. (The Godfather!) But after Salim’s attack on Jamal and the stealing of Latika, the meeting is short.
Time passes, and Jamal works as a telemarketing assistant. Once more, he resolves to try to find Latika and begins by phoning his cruel brother Salim successfully. He was able to conclude that slumlord Javed Khan, the employer of Salim, holds Latika, after meeting his brother for the first time in years.
When the movie opens, a Mumbai police station tortures Jamal Malik (played by Dev Patel). An 18-year-old orphan who grew up in the slums of Mumbai and works as a chai wallah (tea server) in a call center is a matter of being able to get a grand prize on the next episode of the popular Indian TV show Who wants to be a millionaire, and Prem (Anil Kapoor), the host of the show as well as the police assume that he is tricked. However, Jamal may not lie, the police inspector (Irrfan Khan) thinks.
About the quiz
As the inspector is putting the show on a video, a number of flashbacks highlight the lives of Jamal to answer every single question in the right way. Next to the ghetto the Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan visited the slum and after escaping from an outhouse in which his brother imprisoned him, Jamal received an autograph, who stole and sold his brother. (The first question on the show of quizzes is to call for Amitabh Bachchan’s name for the 1973 smash film star.)
(Jamal meets a child dressed as God Rama during the melee; another topic on the show is what Rama is shown as a holding.) After the shipping containers, Jamal and Salim have taken refuge in, Latika, a young girl, enters and Jamal invites her, against the concerns of Salim. The criminal Maman (Ankur Vikal) then brought three kids into his child’s gang of beggars onto the streets. When Jamal and Salim came close together, they stated they were Athos and Porthos, but when they joined them, they never gave Latika a moniker, merely calling her “the third musketeer.” Jamal acknowledges that he does not know the solution to the game show host, but his last “friend’s phone” is to contact a single man, his brother Salim, with his heart-knowing the phone number. Jamal is struck that it isn’t Salim who answers the telephone, it is Latika who answers it. Salim came back to his former childhood and helped him from the clutches of Javed.
