We know it may sound like a terrible girl, disgusting, up-to-no-good, but she’s only incredibly young and curious. Indeed so curious, that she escapes the mortal world, blinded by the sun, forgets who she is and, before she dies, she lives a life of suffering and terror.
This is not going to be a joyful narrative if that is any indicator (and, yeah, it is). But relatively few reports are reliable about the Spanish Civil War.
Ofelia and her mother Carmen were initially presented to us when they were traveling to the mansion of Kaptain Vidal. Carmen is Preggo, and Ofelia’s mind is lost in the fairy world (and hasn’t had an easy time of this). She even thinks a bug is a fairy… and not a gorgeous butterfly. She believes a horrible insect stick is a pixy from the earth.
If we had been trusted in the fairies, like scary twigs, that Peter Pan had requested us to bang our hands, we would have sit on our dangerous hands and allowed Tinkerbell to die.

We meet Captain Vidal, who is the hubby Carmen, and his soldiers when they arrive. The rebels in the adjacent woods are busy battling. (It’s the kind of shrimp who think people are the most deadly game.)

Ofelia looks at a group of feasts and follows one to a maze outside Vidal’s campground. It also meets Mercedes and Doctor Ferreiro, a housekeeper who works for Vidal, but covertly helps guerrillas who live in the forest in the immediate vicinity. In the labyrinth, Ofelia, a fauna tells her she is Princess Moanna’s reincarnation. The first goal is to feed stones into a big toad that lives in a tree that is very old and then extracts a key from its abdomen. She finishes this fairly gruesome duty and comes back home.
On the following visit to Ofelia by the faun, he gives her the next job with chalk. He also offers her a root of mandrake to place beneath the bed of her sick mother to heal her.
