“Midnight Cowboy” is one of a select group of films that remains in our minds long after the others have faded away from our consciousness. Other films have used its love tale between two drifters, the nave Joe Buck and the street-savvy Ratso Rizzo, as a model. Ratso’s pounding on a taxi and yelling, “I’m walking here!” have become folklore.

And yet, and yet, despite all of this… Having seen the picture again in 1994, I agree with my original 1969 assessment that the film as a whole doesn’t live up to its individual elements. While the storyline takes a detour into the stylish New York demimonde, Joe and Ratso rise above the material, taking on a reality of their own. It’s a terrific movie, but it’s hiding a masterpiece that’s trying to get out.

Editor’s Picks

The best part of the movie is Jon Voight and Dustin Hoffman’s acting as a Texas drifter and a Broadway street hustler, respectively. After the success of “The Graduate,” Hoffman had many more notes in him, and he was destined to become one of the great character actors of his generation. Both Voight and Hoffman were nominated for an Academy Award for their performances as actors. This is the Times Square of the 1960s, which felt dismal and frightening at the time — but now seems to occupy a middle ground between modern despair and Damon Runyon’s myths.

Sally Buck (Ruth White) cared for him often, and his mother and grandmother may have been prostitutes. He also had a lover, Annie (Jennifer Salt). In New York, he rents a room in a fleabag motel and hits the streets in search of customers, which he finds. Joe encounters Cass (Sylvia Miles), a call lady who takes him to her penthouse apartment for sex. The tuberculous Ratso Rizzo greets Joe in a bar when he enters the establishment (Dustin Hoffman).

Joe flees after Ratso promises to introduce him to a known pimp, Mr. O’Daniel (John McGiver), for $20. He soon runs out of money and is unable to access his hotel room due to the lock being broken. However, the young man (Bob Balaban) has no money with which to compensate him. Ratso offers Joe to live with him in his apartment in a condemned tenement building when he sees Joe again. In addition to committing little crimes with Joe, Ratso also serves as the latter’s manager.

The event will feature some of Warhol’s Superstars, including Isabelle Collin Dufresne (aka Ultra Violet), Taylor Mead, Joe Dallesandro, and the Warhol-related director Paul Morrissey.

But Joe cannot perform sexually. He leaves the party with a socialite named Shirley, who agrees to pay him $20 for the night. Because of the wordplay that results from their Scribbage game, Shirley speculates that Joe may be gay, and Joe is immediately in high spirits. Joe’s career appears to be finally taking off as she introduces him to her female friend the following morning.

Upon his return, Ratso is bedridden and suffering from a high temperature. Joe and Ratso take a bus to Florida with the money they have saved. He becomes incontinent and sweat-soaked during the voyage, and his condition continues to decline.

Joe buys new clothing for Ratso and himself at a rest stop and discards his cowboy costume in the process.. On the bus, Joe contemplates that hustling isn’t the only way to make money, telling Ratso he hopes to get work in Florida. Joe understands Ratso’s death when he fails to answer. The driver informs Joe that there is nothing he can do but keep driving until he reaches Miami, asking Joe to close Ratso’s eyelids as he drives. Alone, Joe holds the arm of his deceased friend as he sobs.
