The African Queen is a classic adventure tale by C.S. Forester, published in 1935. As a captain and a missionary try to escape German forces and the African forest during World War I, they form a bond. As a prize-winning English novelist, Forester was most renowned for his tales of adventure and naval battles, such as A Ship of the Line and Flying Colours. 1951 saw the release of Humphrey Bogart and Kathryn Hepburn’s film rendition of The African Queen.

As of 1914, the first world war had just started. Rose Sayer, 33, cares for her dying brother Samuel in a community in German-colonized Tanganyika (now Tanzania). Because the Germans have conscripted all the residents, their village is abandoned.

As a result of Samuel’s death one night, Rose is left trapped in German territory. In the early morning hours of the next day, Charlie Allnutt, an Englishman, arrives in the community. His boat, the African Queen, is steam-powered, and he is the skipper. In Africa, he and his two crewmates are working for the Belgian mining business, but his crewmates have fled from the Germans, leaving him and the ship behind.

When he arrived at the village, he was looking for assistance, but instead, he met Rose. As Allnutt assists her in burying Samuel, the African Queen receives Samuel and returns to Africa with him.

It’s a good thing that the African Queen is packed with plenty of food, explosives, oxygen and hydrogen tanks, and other supplies. Rose wants to avenge Samuel’s treatment at the hands of the Germans, and so she devises a plot to do just that. Rose asks Allnutt if he can turn the explosives into a torpedo that they can use to take down the gunboat Königin Luise, which is the Germans’ main waterway defense. In his conclusion, Allnutt suggests loading the explosives into the oxygen and hydrogen tanks after they have been emptied. In order to carry out their plan, they begin piloting the African Queen down the Ulanga River to Lake Wittelsbach where the Königin Luise is stationed. Africa, World War I; a tiny settlement of grass huts built around a wooden church is located in a German-occupied colony along the Uganda River. Suddenly, the Germans emerge out of nowhere, slaughtering the women and children, burning down the cottages, and seizing the men. As a result of his grief, Reverend Samuel Sayer murders himself, leaving his sister Rose to care for herself. Rose is also depressed.

About the quiz

Germany’s occupation of the colony is hazardous, and the possibility of a replay of the savagery is ever-present. The only way out is the wild and savage Utanga River. However, if Rose can make it to Lake Victoria, she may be set free.

In a state of shock over her brother’s death and disorientation, Rose stumbles around the pool table when Charlie Allnut arrives out of nowhere. His role is that of a boat captain’s “sea dog” who brings the village’s letters and supplies. Before the Germans return, he puts Rose onto the supply boat, the African Queen. A rusty, scarcely seaworthy boat, Allnut’s boat relies more on his engine than on skilled mechanics to run.

At the onset of World War I, Charlie Allnut (Humphrey Bogart) and Rose Sayer (Katharine Hepburn) are two Canadian riverboat captains who are at odds with each other. He helps her bury her brother and flee aboard his rickety boat, the African Queen, after German troops burn down Rose’s mission, killing Rose’s clergyman-brother (Robert Morley). Rosa despises Charlie’s drinking and harsh behavior.

In order to assault Louisa, a German cruiser near the mouth of the river, she rigs up homemade torpedoes on their craft. While traveling, the mismatched couple encounters a series of challenges — including rapids, torrential storms, and damage to the boat — while exchanging insults and barbs. It’s only a matter of time before their mutual admiration evolves to love. The African Queen capsizes before the two can complete their plan.
