Spade’s office is invaded by the stunning Miss Wonderly, who begins the novel. It turns out that she’s a knockout when it comes to making money, as well. She also wants to employ a private investigator to track down her sister, who allegedly went off with a thief named Thursby.

Neither Spade nor Miles Archer is convinced by her tale. Who cares, though, given the money she’s paying? Spade learns that he’s getting more than he bargained for when Archer and Thursby are killed. Miles is concerned about his relationship with Archer’s wife, Iva, and that the police will discover that he is having an affair with her.

After questioning Miss Wonderly about the two murders, Spade realizes that she has been lying about them all along: she has no sister, her real name is Brigid O’Shaughnessy, and Thursby was her former partner before she was killed.

Editor’s Picks

In order to sell a jewel-encrusted falcon sculpture to her former gang: Casper Gutman (the head leader), Joel Cairo (his right-hand man), and Wilmer, Brigid entices Spade to join her (his hitman). Their tactics include tailing, drugging, mugging, and holding him at gunpoint in order to learn what he and Brigid know about the falcon’s whereabouts. Spade, on the other hand, is a shrew.

To verify the authenticity of the Maltese falcon’s history, he consults his loyal secretary, Effie Perrine.

He arranges a meeting with Gutman when Brigid vanishes without warning. As Spade recovers from his thrashing by Wilmer, a mysterious parcel from the dying Captain Jacobi of the ship La Paloma arrives at his office. Also, you must try to play The Maltese Falcon quiz.

Miss Wonderly appears to Samuel Spade and Miles Archer’s detective firm in San Francisco in the late 1920s. He claims to have taken her younger sister Corinne. She urges the investigators to track out Floyd Thursby. Spade, who is wary of Wonderly, mocks Archer’s rashness.

He receives a phone call that evening informing him that his partner has been slain. Spade discusses the likelihood that Thursby killed Archer with police officer Tom Polhaus when he arrives at the crime site. Polhamus and Lieutenant Dundy, an arrogant and boisterous cop, arrive at Spade’s door an hour after he returns to his apartment with inquiries concerning the murder.

Spade and Archer’s wife, Iva Archer, discuss their secret affair in Spade’s office the next day. However, despite the fact that she does not disclose any additional information, Spade accepts to continue working for her.

About the quiz

Joel Cairo, Spade’s boss, promises him $5,000 if he can rescue a falcon statue. After a second meeting, Spade tells Brigid about his encounter with Cairo and the offer he accepted. Apparently familiar with Cairo, Brigid asks if Spade might set up a meeting for her to speak with him. Cairo offers to pay Brigid for the bird at the meeting, but Brigid says she doesn’t have it yet. That night, they both go to bed at the same time.

Miss Wonderly, who claims to have run off with Thursby, enters Spade’s office to ask for help in finding her younger sister. The detectives are hired by Wonderly to track Thursby down and discover out where he is staying after she tells them she has agreed to meet with him. But the money she provides makes the danger worthwhile, so Archer and Spade agree to take the case.

He refuses to get close enough to observe Archer’s body and leaves the murder scene suddenly.

Until he has spoken with his client, Spade refuses to provide any information about him to the police. The next day, he goes to her residence in search of information. As Brigid O’Shaughnessy, Wonderly exposes her true identity and begs Spade’s protection from the police, but without divulging any knowledge about what is truly taking place in the story. While Spade recognizes her fragility as an act, he decides to assist her as much as possible, especially because it could help him clear his own name.
