After leaping off a cruise ship and swimming to shore, young heiress Ellie Andrews (Claudette Colbert) nearly escapes her domineering father. Despite having previously married King Wesley, she is outraged that her father won’t let her to live with him.

The night bus from Miami to New York is where Ellie meets newspaper reporter Peter Warne (Clark Gable). Because her father is already on the hunt for her, she maintains her identity a closely guarded secret. “Ellie’s whole socialite thing is a bunch of hooey,” adds Warne.

But Peter refuses, stating he’ll assist out only because he can.

Peter and Ellie fall into an accident after the mishap, resulting in hilarity. When Ellie’s bag is taken, all she has is $4 for the entire trip. She then misses the bus, but Peter is there to meet her when she returns.

After all, a flood-damaged bridge prevents our tourists from continuing their journey. For Ellie’s safety, Peter poses as the woman’s husband.

Peter hangs a blanket that he calls “the Walls of Jericho” in the center of the room to create a barrier between their twin beds, which initially offends her.

Ellie’s father sends investigators to the campground the next morning to look for her. Peter and Ellie put on a show, claiming to be arguing couples, in order to elude the authorities. As a result, her father kidnapped Ellie and is detaining her aboard a small yacht against her will. Her refusal to dine there eventually leads her to jump off of the boat and swim to land. Despite the efforts of Mr. Andrew’s staff, Ellie is able to board a night bus and travel to New York, where she will be reunited with her husband, King. After being let go by his editor, bitter newspaperman Peter Warne is boarding the same bus.

As Ellie and Peter board the bus, they form a tense friendship. Having been pampered and served her entire life, Ellie isn’t sure how to take care of herself. Peter watches a man taking Ellie’s bag at one of the bus stops while she is smoking a cigarette. But Peter is unable to catch the robber. Upon arriving at the next stop, Ellie checks into a luxurious hotel and expects the bus to be there when she returns. But it doesn’t and she’s stuck in Jacksonville for the rest of the day!

She does not, however, want his assistance.

About the quiz

On the following bus to New York, Peter and Ellie both board the vehicle together. Shapely, a smarmy and rude seatmate, continues to make lecherous advances on Ellie. Peter jumps in and claims to be Ellie’s husband to stop him. A curtain separates their beds in the cabin, which Peter refers to as “the walls of Jericho.”

Ellie is first annoyed by Peter’s lack of privacy, but she soon warms up to him.

When struggling newspaperman Peter Warne finds out that his bus-riding companion, Ellie Andrews, has run away, he becomes determined to stop her.

Because he hasn’t yet conceived of his story about Ellie, why is this the First Plot Point? Because they’ll have to remain together for the rest of the novel due to a pact they make, the scene itself emphasizes the romance that will develop between them. Two independent people traveling the same bus are no longer able to live in their “normal world.”

Ellie’s father has hired detectives to search for her in the cabin. The hostile force in this novel is everything that tries to separate Ellie and Peter on the most fundamental level. In this first pressure point, Ellie’s father threatens to take her back instead of her husband.
