After leaping off a cruise ship and swimming to shore, young heiress Ellie Andrews (Claudette Colbert) nearly escapes her domineering father. Despite having previously married King Wesley, she is outraged that her father won’t let her to live with him.
The night bus from Miami to New York is where Ellie meets newspaper reporter Peter Warne (Clark Gable). Because her father is already on the hunt for her, she maintains her identity a closely guarded secret. “Ellie’s whole socialite thing is a bunch of hooey,” adds Warne.
But Peter refuses, stating he’ll assist out only because he can.
Peter and Ellie fall into an accident after the mishap, resulting in hilarity. When Ellie’s bag is taken, all she has is $4 for the entire trip. She then misses the bus, but Peter is there to meet her when she returns.
