The novel Franny and Zooey is divided into two portions, each of which was first released as a separate short story in the New Yorker magazine. The New Yorker published “Franny,” the first story or portion, in January 1955. In the movie “Franny,” Franny Glass visits her boyfriend Lane Coutell for a weekend of college football. However, due to Franny starting to suffer a breakdown during their first meal together, they are unable to participate in many of the festivities. She confesses to Lane that she is tired of the faculty’s egotism and the school’s phoniness. She left the play she was in because she was ashamed of how she felt she was performing.
