What’s the difference between Jennifer Lopez’s new romantic comedy “Marry Me” and a heart-shaped box of Valentine’s Day chocolates? As Forrest Gump pointed out, you never know what you’re going to get in a box of chocolates, but you know exactly what you’re going to get in “Marry Me.” But, hey, it’s still a chocolate box. What you’ll get may not be particularly nourishing, but it will taste delicious.
It may feel like a reimagining of “Notting Hill,” with an adorably dorky ordinary guy falling for a glamorous superstar, but it is based on a web comic-turned graphic novel series by Bobby Crosby and Remy “Eisu” Mokhtar. Lopez portrays Kat Valdez, a three-time divorced pop star. She is constantly surrounded by people who are posting on her numerous social media accounts and ensuring that she fulfills her promotional obligations. Every minute, cameras are trained on her, either to be instantly uploaded or “banked” for later release. She is a product rather than a person.
Kat’s most recent hit is “Marry Me,” a duet with her fiancé, Bastian (Colombian singer Maluma). They’ve announced that they’ll cap off her “Marry Me” concert tour by having their wedding on stage and streaming it live to an estimated 20 million people. She learns, seconds before the ceremony, that Bastian has been unfaithful. Also, you must try to play this Marry Me Quiz.
Marry Me Quiz
Charlie (Owen Wilson), a grade school math teacher and single father invited to the concert by his friend Parker, is in the audience (Sarah Silverman). Kat notices him in the audience, holding Parker’s “Marry Me” sign, and says yes on the spur of the moment, inviting him on stage. And he accepts, not because he has romantic hopes for her, but because he does not want to add to her humiliation by rejecting her. Also, you will find out which character are you in this quiz.
Kat and her team promise to donate to Charlie’s school in exchange for him agreeing to the marriage for a few months, making some public appearances, and doing some interviews. On the red carpet, he stands beside her. She appears at Math Club to teach the kids some cool dance moves as well as a lesson in resilience. He encourages her to remove the hair extensions and turn off the cameras. She encourages him to make some insignificant changes, but this film isn’t really about him.
Lopez can act, as evidenced by her performances in “Hustlers,” “Selena,” and, most notably, “Out of Sight.” She doesn’t have to in this situation. She plays a character who is very similar to herself, a pop star and celebrity who has not been lucky in love and is still “Jenny from the block” at heart. “She’s just a girl standing in front of a boy, begging him to love her,” she says. That last bit is from “Notting Hill.” It’s very easy to mix them up.
About the quiz
Lopez is the film’s beating heart, relying on her warmth and star power. She shines in a number of concert appearances. The songs are all bangers, though one will raise eyebrows for some viewers, with dancers dressed in nuns’ coifs and wimples, Lopez barely dressed, and lyrics that use the church to refer to love or something more physical. The title track and “On My Way” will compete with the “Encanto” songs on the Hot 100.
Wilson’s quiet moments have an endearing tenderness to them. It’s easy to believe that actors in their 50s are playing characters in their 30s. They look fantastic. Wilson’s shaggy charm hasn’t changed since “Wedding Crashers,” and J.Lo is ageless. But they bring a mature sweetness and a sense of calm to Charlie and Kat’s relationship that we don’t usually see in rom-com, and it’s very welcome. If “Marry Me” over-repeats its mantra about sitting in the question until the answer finds you, at least it reflects seasoned patience that is a welcome change from the usual frantic emotions of film love stories.
