A character archetype that has risen to become one of the most well-known and recognized anime character archetypes. A yandere is a character, male or female (though generally female), who is madly in love with someone but is also mentally insane in some form or another, to the point that they act violently. Typically, this takes the form of demanding the love interest’s complete, undivided attention and taking great lengths to prevent other potential love interests from interacting with their beloved. Alternatively, they could take extreme means to keep their romantic interest by their side at all times, such as tying them up or warning them not to look at another member of the opposite sex while holding a knife to their throat. About the quiz
The exact date when the phrase “yandere” was coined is buried someplace on a Japanese internet forum, but we may presume it was after 2002 because that is when the term “tsundere” was coined. Much to the term “tsundere,” the term gained popularity in the dating sim and visual novel scenes, particularly in the popular game Shuffle, with Kaede and her famed box cutters. However, it truly took off with School Days, a dating sim knew for having multiple violent Bad Ends. Bad Ends were not prevalent in dating simulations. You made some bad judgments, and in the worst-case scenario, the girls you may have dated left the country or perished in vehicle accidents. The difference in School Days was the ferociousness of these Bad Ends, which frequently involved yandere who felt they had been wronged.
Although there is no precise year when this phrase was originally used to describe such characters in anime, it is said that it was developed from two other Japanese phrases. The name is taken from the Japanese word “yandere,” which means “mentally ill.” The second term is “dere,” which means “lovesick” in this context. The two phrases were combined to create the term and definition of a character who is so emotionally devoted to her love or crush that she becomes mentally unbalanced and willing to do anything for him to be with her alone.
