Hilda, like Dawn, suffers from protagonist syndrome, although, unlike Dawn, she didn’t make her anime debut until the series was well past its prime.
Nonetheless, she has one of the best and more mature character designs in the game, which corresponds wonderfully with the themes in BW being far more advanced than anything else we’ve seen.
Pokémon Black and White is the epitome of what Pokémon could be. A well-written and thought-provoking story that is also entertaining for a general audience.
Hilda is a typical girl from her era, which is why she is included here. That, and those denim shorts.
About the quiz
Skyla runs what is possibly my favorite gym in Pokémon history. It emphasizes, in particular, how inadequate the League’s health and safety laws are.
It takes a certain kind of psychopath to think, “Let’s shoot all of our potential opponents out of cannons,” yet Skyla came up with the concept.
That, together with her simple yet beautiful design, makes her the ideal example of a gym leader done correctly. There are better ones, but Skyla demonstrates that you don’t have to go overboard to be effective.
Nessa is one of the most recent additions to this list, which is fantastic. After how poorly the previous two generations performed, it’s good that SWSH had such well-designed gym leaders.
Aside from the fact that Nessa is… pretty… she has a fantastic design that shows how much work and cares Gamefreak put into SWSH.
Everything about her is water-themed, right down to the design of her footwear. It’s an improvement over earlier versions, which were appropriate for the franchise’s maiden excursion into completely 3D realms.
