Bakugo Katsuki, who plays the rival and foil for Midoriya Izuku’s character development in Kohei Horikoshi’s My Hero Academia, appears to be an exception but isn’t. Looking at similar relationships in anime, such as the classic rivalries between Pokemon’s Ash Ketchum and Gary Oak or Naruto (ShippudenUzumaki )’s Naruto and Uchiha Sasuke, it’s clear that there is another character archetype for the anime/manga protagonist/deuteragonist, the jerk with a golden heart.

Izuku’s childhood pal is Bakugo Katsuki. Bakugo was a charismatic, fearless, daring child who loved to cause havoc. His demeanor becomes harsh. He is short-tempered, harsh in his use of profanity, and grew to become Midoriya’s tormentor at the start of the franchise. Bakugo is arrogant, believing that physical power is the only trait required to become the number one hero and conquer any task.

Editor’s Picks

With a powerful and destructive quirk, “Explosion,” and sharing Midoriya’s idolization of the biggest hero in the My Hero Academia universe (bordering on super fanboy levels), All Might, Bakugo is designed to be a fully offensive fighter by collecting the nitroglycerin-like sweat coating his palms and hurling fiery bombs at his opponents in quick succession. Midoriya, on the other hand, demonstrates that power alone is insufficient to become the greatest hero. This enrages Bakugo since he is aware that he lacks certain heroic attributes that Midoriya possesses, such as selflessness, which makes him angry toward Midoriya. Bakugo’s demeanor can be regarded as a nasty method of showing respect for his boyhood pal. It reveals not only Bakugo’s weakness and flaws but also his desire to grow and become a greater hero.

The first thing that distinguishes Bakugo from other anime bullies, and bullies characters in general, is his intelligence. Unlike other bullies, such as Ryoma Terasaka in ASSASSINATION CLASSROOM, Bakugo continually exhibits his cerebral brilliance. Even as a kindergartner, he learned faster than his colleagues, learning to read before them. He declared as a middle schooler at the start of Season 1 that he aced the mock entrance exam for U.A. This is probably equivalent to receiving a perfect score on the SAT or ACT.

About the quiz

Even in battle, his knowledge shines through. While he does utilize physical intimidation like other bullies, he does not use his power or Quirk mindlessly. Bakugo regularly demonstrates his tactical abilities during the Sports Festival Arc. In the cavalry combat, he is able to reclaim the points stolen by Monoma by tactically utilizing his friends’ Quirks. Also, throughout tournament encounters, he swiftly learns his opponents’ weaknesses, such as Tokoyami’s Dark Shadow’s vulnerability to light.

Another feature that distinguishes Bakugo from other bully characters is his superiority complex (and resulting insecurity). Bakugo was often loved and commended as a child for his brains and talents. As a result, he felt that he had to be better than everyone else. Midoriya’s lack of talent and quirkiness bolstered this notion.

Midoriya’s acts, on the other hand, clearly contradict Bakugo’s logic, which enrages him. Midoriya continues to concern about people while being “weak,” which means he worries when he is unable to protect others or himself, in Bakugo’s opinion. Bakugo didn’t expect anyone to be concerned when he fell off a branch as a child. His reasoning was that since he was the strongest, there was no reason to be concerned. Midoriya, on the other hand, rushed to assist. The same scenario happens when Bakugo is a middle schooler and is attacked by the Sludge Villain. Midoriya, who lacked power, arrived to assist.
