“Tokyo Ghoul” is the story of a college student who is lucky enough to get a date with an attractive woman. A flesh-eating monster turns out to be the date’s date. Wrinkly Kaneki, stuck in the alley with a dangerous predator, survives only after an unexpected construction accident knocks both of them out of commission. As a result of a strange doctor’s intervention, Kaneki’s organs are transplanted into her body. Initially, Kaneki’s recovery progresses as usual, until he finds that conventional food has begun to disgust him and that the aroma of human flesh has become more appealing.
Unlike vampires or werewolves, Tokyo Ghoul’s monster is a tad more violent. The first season follows Kaneki as he struggles to acclimate to his new persona. Lucky for Kaneki, he stumbles into one of the nicer factions of the Ghouls right away. Ghouls known as “Anteiku” aim to avoid harming humans by eating corpses. As a member of a hunted minority, its members teach Kaneki about his body’s new functions and the skills necessary to survive in civilization. One of the most major plot arcs in this part of the story involves Kaneki’s initial contact with the CCG, a government agency responsible for monitoring and exterminating Ghouls. He makes an unexpected acquaintance with a member of the group, Amon, while participating in a storm of vengeance-driven violence against the cult. While the two are ostensibly at odds, Kaneki’s act of kindness makes Amon wonder if Ghouls are really simply monsters.
During a date with Rize Kamishiro, Ken Kaneki almost escapes death. Kaneki realizes that he underwent surgery that turned him into a half-ghoul when he recovers from it. Rize’s organs were transplanted into his body, and now he must eat human flesh to survive. A group of half-ghoul ghouls running the coffee shop “Anteiku” take him in and help him adjust to his new life.
Many of the story ideas in Tokyo Ghoul are not unique in the world of film animation. For example, consider the plight of the Ghouls, a human-like monster with better physical attributes.
