It tells the story of Kousei, a teenage piano prodigy who, following the death of his mother, has a mental collapse and loses the capacity to hear what he is playing. Three years later, Kousei meets Kaori, the new girlfriend of his playboy best friend. A free-spirited violinist, Kaori makes it her life’s purpose to rekindle Kousei’s lost love for performing music on the stage.
All that changes the minute he meets Kaori. Kaori’s presence on screen makes the series’ color palette immensely bright. You can see how love impacts your worldview in this beautiful illustration by artist Roberto Alonso. All of a sudden, everything seems brighter when you are in love.
Many times in the series, we get to hear how he hears his own music—how it suddenly transforms from a magnificent classical score to a muffled sound. As the title contains the word “lie,” it is no surprise that lying is a major theme in this anime. Many little lies are revealed as the series develops (and one central one). Some of the characters’ innermost thoughts are revealed, and viewers learn that some lies are not just meant to deceive others, but are also meant to deceive themselves. Presented as “truth” and repeated to themselves, these lies serve as a mechanism for the character to cope with the environment around them (e.g., “There is nothing wrong with me. I am perfectly fine.”)

Ryouta, Kousei and Tsubaki’s childhood friend, has been there for Kousei through all of his highs and lows, good and bad. “Ryouta” is captain of the school soccer squad and is immensely popular with girls. His occasional incisive insights are all the more stunning because of his flippant demeanor. His concern for his pals, though, is genuine and he will do everything in his power to help them recover.
