As we begin the video, we see a peek at Shouya Ishida’s current state of mind. It appears that the child is about to commit suicide by jumping off a bridge, but he decides to stop in his tracks. This scene is followed by a flashback to Shouya’s elementary school days, a few years earlier. He used to be a young, lively, and carefree boy who enjoyed spending time with his pals every day of his life. Shoko Nishimiya, a peculiar little girl, transfers to his school one day.
Shoko is treated well initially in her new home. Her comfort is a priority for most of the kids. Although little Shoko’s communication with others is documented in a notebook, the other children get weary of her and her journal over time. The bullying begins when Shouya notices that Shoko’s classmate is becoming irritated with Shoko’s style of talking.
Shouya decides to remove Shoko’s hearing aids by force one day. The girl’s ears begin to bleed from the inside out. Shouya’s class is visited the next day by a school teacher who informs him that Shoko is being bullied. Otherwise, the parents would have to get involved.

Shouya’s mother takes him to Shoko’s family once he comes home. She also tears her earrings out of her ears to make up for the grief that her son had given Shoko’s mother by returning all of Shoko’s lost hearing aids. Shouya discovers that things have changed the next day. Instead of Shoko, he plays the tormented child from school. When Shoko tries to help Shouya, a fight breaks out between the two people. Shoko transfers to a new school after this battle.
You may want to get up and yell at the screen if you’re the type who can’t control yourself. As a result of this, you will become emotionally attached to these characters. Shoko’s bullies included.
That’s when the real problems start to arise. Is it eternally damning for Shoya and Shoko to have bullied each other in middle school? On the other hand, are they deserving of forgiveness, given what Shoya did and how no one did anything more than be indifferent or encourage him until the grownups found out about it? Shoya, at 17 years old, is a loner. He doesn’t interact with anyone and avoids eye contact with his peers at all costs. As a child, he used to cause a commotion and lead the group. In recent years, he has grown outwardly timid and physically ill when worried. No consideration for his own well-being is evident from his untidy clothing. He imagines what the other students will say about him, such as “He’s always alone” or “Why does he even live?”.
Everyone’s faces are obscured in the distance, their bodies aren’t visible above the waist, and their faces are covered by a giant blue “X” when they’re close together. Shoya has effectively removed them from his environment in this way. His mother and niece are among the only persons whose faces we can see.
A bullying child, yes. A child who was still maturing, no. It took Shoya five years to learn from his faults, and you wonder if the punishment is too harsh for him now.
Since the old oppressor is obviously not the same guy from years before, you feel pity for him.
While the protagonist of most stories is a personable, sympathetic figure, this story’s choice is both unique and bold. Shoya, on the other hand, is unlikable and basically the villain of the picture. Incoherently, he injured an innocent victim. Nevertheless, this is real. Every person has a past that they regret. As a result, I appreciate the developers for not taking the safe, conventional approach.
