Unhappiness and longing for anything that would bind us to a more frequently felt sense of normalcy are two possible explanations. ‘Your Name’ (the top-earning film of last year in Japan and the biggest grossing anime film of all time globally, surpassing ‘Spirited Away’) is about this incredibly human sense of searching for something, someone, or somewhere. Then, the list goes on and on. Gorgeous, fascinating work that has a difficult start but gains incredible speed into a moving, emotionally charged ending.

About the quiz

No other animated feature this year looks as good as this one.

Also, “Freaky Friday” writer/director Makoto Shinkai injects melancholy and honesty into a subject that could have been corny. Also, the set-up is really straightforward: In Itomori, a beautiful, small village in the Hida region of Japan, Mitsuha (Mone Kamishiraishi) is a high school student; Taki (Ryunosuke Kamiki) is a slightly older boy living in Tokyo. Despite the fact that they are both typical youngsters with their own social circles, they have no real connection and have extremely different lifestyles, at least in part because of their equally beautiful environments in the city and in the country.

On one occasion, Taki wakes up and finds breasts on his bedside table. Mitsuha’s body is occupied by the apparition. Mitsuha awakens the next morning in her own shape, but with only faint memories of the previous day. And, of course, the opposite is also true.

In a phone message, Mitsuha informs Taki of a festival and a comet passing over her town. Oddly, Taki is unable to see the comet, even though Mitsuha assures him that it will be visible in the sky.

Taki decides to visit Mitsuha in Itomori after the comet is said to have passed. When Taki arrives in Itomori, he discovers that Mitsuha’s village was destroyed by a comet three years ago.
