Though anime is most known for immensely successful shonen series like “Naruto” and equally legendary shoujo series like “Sailor Moon,” there are a plethora of hidden programs with distinct concepts ranging from the bizarre to the downright bizarre. The intense gambling-centered series “Kakegurui” is one of the most unusual anime presently streaming on Netflix.

Editor’s Picks

“Kakegurui” follows pupils at a prominent school where gambling, rather than grades or athletics, is the way to rise in power and prestige — and losers who fall into debt must serve as servants to the winning students. Even though the series launched in 2017, and Season 2 premiered in 2019, there is yet to be a third season. Fans of “Kakegurui” will hopefully be able to enjoy further seasons of the twisted drama now that Netflix has taken on more original anime projects. Also, you will find out which Kakegurui character are you in this quiz.

Which Kakegurui character are you?

Until then, let’s take a look at the ending of “Kakegurui” Season 2 and what the kids might be up to in the future.

The majority of Season 2 focuses on the election for the next student body president of Hyakkaou Private Academy when the powerful Kirari Momobami (voiced by Miyuki Sawashiro) resigns. And why is the election so important? Kirari helped to construct the current social order and “pet” system as the head of the Momobami family and president of the school, thus a change in leadership may dramatically affect the lives of the pupils – depending on the winner.

Throughout “Kakegurui xx,” we learn about the election regulations, which are administered by an election committee. During the 30-day election period, participants can win chips – but these chips are worth votes rather than money. The more bets a person wins, the more vote chips (and hence votes) they get, and the person with the most chips at the end of 30 days wins and becomes the new president.

Of course, the vicious Kirari enjoys watching the turmoil as the students compete in crazy gambling games for the chance to become president. Yumeko Jabami (Saori Hayami), the series protagonist; the kind former house pet Ryota Suzui (Tatsuya Tokutake); the once-cruel but intelligent Mary Saotome (Minami Tanaka); and the business savvy Itsuki Sumeragi (Yuki Wakai) are among the main competitors, though all students have a chance to compete.

About the quiz

The Japanese government confirmed at the end of 2016 that gambling would be legalized throughout Japan before the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.

Gambling will remain an illegal and taboo subject until the finer aspects are settled via an implementation bill in the coming months. This taboo is addressed in Kakegurui – Compulsive Gambler by emphasizing the highs and lows of gambling.

It is pioneering new territory. Being so open to the subject of gambling would have been nearly impossible a few years ago, but the series embraces it as its main premise.

Finally, gambling in anime can be found somewhere except Yuzu Sato.

The series’ stated target audience is shonen. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the word, it refers to males aged 8 to 18 years old.

Those series demonstrate that the intended demographic is not the only one who can appreciate the content. Enough is going on for older viewers to become addicted to the show as well.
