The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles is harshly critical of Britain and Japan’s ties with it from the start. Kazuma Asogi, Ryunosuke’s spouse, is the principal critic of the unequal treaties negotiated between the two countries, claiming at one point that “our wimpy administration is afraid of upsetting England’s policymakers.”

Editor’s Picks

When Ryunosuke is charged with murder in the first case, an Englishwoman named Jezaille Brett testifies. The perpetrators in beginning Ace Attorney cases are always very obvious, allowing the player to learn the ropes, but The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles messes with this notion. The appearance of Jezaille is more than just a tutorial – it’s a thesis on what the game wants to convey about the unfairness of empire.

Which Ace Attorney character are you?

Jezaille is an outright racist from the start. She accuses Japanese people of being untrustworthy and ignorant, and she is particularly scathing of their language’s “vulgarity.” Regardless, the judge and prosecutor adore her and England in general. When Ryunosuke starts making charges, they accuse him of jeopardizing the fragile relationship between the two countries. Also, you will find out which Ace Attorney character are you in this quiz.

Ryunosuke is acquitted, but it is strongly indicated that Jezaille will walk free. Though Ryunosuke does not take the blame, he is dissatisfied with how imperialist diplomacy thwarted justice and ultimately stopped the complete truth from being disclosed.

Coming to respect the truth above everything else is a key arc shared by all Ace Attorney heroes. Phoenix Wright receives a poor ending in the second game, Justice for All if the player continues to plead for a not guilty verdict for his truly guilty client. Apollo Justice quits the squad for a spell in Dual Destinies, questioning whether the truth is the same for everyone. Miles Edgeworth’s redemption arc begins with him requesting the judge to postpone a trial he was about to win because he doesn’t feel the true narrative has been revealed, and his attention on this question continues throughout the rest of the series, including his spinoff. (This is my formal request that everyone plays both Ace Attorney Investigations games.)

About the quiz

What distinguishes Ryunosuke is that his main impediment to uncovering the truth isn’t a single case or individual, but the entire British Empire and its relationship to the expanding Japanese one. This obstacle can be found everywhere: When Ryunosuke visits Britain, he encounters both incidental and targeted bigotry. Several characters, including Jezaille, make assertions about the untrustworthiness of Japanese people or make nasty comments about their appearance. His main opponent in the game, prosecutor Barok van Zieks, used insults and openly professes to hate all Japanese people. This racist suspicion is revealed to affect the jury’s judgments, albeit, given the game’s conceit, this can only be taken so far, as Ryunosuke must always win for the player to continue.

Set shortly, attorney Phoenix Wright (Hiroki Narimiya) squares off against childhood buddy and now top prosecutor Miles Edgeworth (Takumi Saito) over client Maya Fey’s guilt or innocence (Mirei Kiritani). The legal system allows for only three days of trial before a judgment is made by the judge. Both guys are under intense strain as they attempt to persuade and convey their cases to the judge.

Following the trial, Phoenix Wright learns that Miles Edgeworth has been arrested for murder. Phoenix Wright chooses to defend his long-time friend and discovers that his adversary is none other than Von Karma (Ryo Ishibashi). Von Karma is a legendary prosecutor who has never lost a court case in his more than 40 years of practice! Meanwhile, Attorney Phoenix Wright is set to unravel a 15-year-old mystery…
