Since the beginning of time, there have been six Astrals (gods) who have guarded and protected the world of Eos. The world prospered until around 2000 years before the start of the game when Ifrit betrayed the Astrals by unleashing Starscourge, a plague that ravaged the nation of Solheim. This sparked a fight among the Astrals, which became known as the Great War of Old.
Starscourge is an organism that absorbs light from the atmosphere, causing the nights to lengthen as the creature grows stronger. Furthermore, the bacteria parasitize humans and animals, transforming them into horrific creatures of darkness (revealed to be the daemons battled throughout the game). As the nights lengthen, more people die and more daemons are born. Light is the only way to defeat Starscourge.
Bahamut bestowed the Crystal on mankind during the Great War of Old. The Crystal contains the soul of the world and bestows magical powers on individuals who are selected. The Oracle and King of Lucis were then chosen by Bahamut to wield the divine powers of the other 5 Astrals and Crystal to guard and save the world from Starscourge.

To harness and employ the magical powers of the Crystal to destroy Starscourge, a ring (later known as the Ring of Lucii) was handed to a selected member of the kingdom of Lucis. As a result, the Caelum lineage became the royal family. The first Oracle was chosen from Tenebrae from the Fleuret family, establishing Tenebrae’s royal line. The Oracle was handed Bahamut’s trident and tasked with assisting the King of Lucis with his duty, treating those infected with Starscourge, and delaying the parasite’s growth/spread. The Crystal originally picked Ardyn Lucis Caelum, the then-king of Lucis, to save the world at the cost of his life. However, for reasons that remain unknown (potential DLC? ), he journeyed around Eos, saving countless lives by absorbing daemons into his body to extinguish Starscourge. Ardyn was rejected by the Astrals for being filthy after ingesting daemons, and he was consequently refused entry to the Astral Realm, which he believed he had earned. The Crystal then chose someone else to be its defender. Ardyn was exiled by Lucis’ new King (hinted in-game to be Izunia Lucis Caelum, a relative of Ardyn and first king in the resulting lineage of Kings of Lucis). Ardyn, who had become immortal as a result of the daemons he had ingested, changed his name to Ardyn Izunia and vowed vengeance by ending the Caelum lineage and destroying the Crystal.

Meanwhile, Bahamut tells what becomes the True King’s prophecy: one day, when darkness veils the globe, a chosen King of Light will arise and destroy Starscourge. The Oracle’s powers would be carried down through the Fleuret family, while the Ring of Lucii would be passed down to the Kings of Lucis. The Kings of Lucis were then tasked with guarding the Crystal, allowing the power to concentrate in the Ring of Lucii until it was powerful enough to destroy the sickness.
Following a time of relative peace, the nation of Nifelheim wants to annex the other countries in Eos to reconstruct a single nation like Solheim once was. Over time, they fought to seize every empire (even Tenebrae) save the land of the Fleurets and Lucis. Some areas are given some degree of autonomy.
As the fight between Nifelheim and Lucis rages on, Ardyn Izunia reappeared and installed himself as chancellor to Nifelheim’s Emperor, Iedolas Aldercapt, a previously benign and beloved ruler. Under Ardyn’s influence, Iedolas pushed for tremendous technological developments in Nifelheim, including the construction of the Magitek army, robotic troops infused with daemons, in preparation for a full-fledged war with Lucis.
