On June 27, a gorgeous day, the residents of a small town congregate in the square for the local lottery. The lottery takes less time in this village than it does in other towns because there are just 300 residents. Children in the village run around gathering stones as they run after finishing school for the summer. They build a pile in the square and tuck the stones inside their pockets. Then the women gather, and finally the males. Families gather around as parents beckon their kids over.
Since Mr. Summers has plenty of time on his hands, he manages the lottery. Mr. Graves, the postmaster, arrive in the square carrying the black box. Mr. Summers
the individual in charge of running the lottery. In addition to calling the names of those who draw the papers, Mr. Summers prepares the slips of paper that go into the black box. He is one of the village elders and the childless owner of a coal firm.
Bill Hutchinson
The spouse of Tessie. Bill chooses a blank piece of paper for the second sketch after drawing on the marked paper in the first. He is more than happy to demonstrate to everyone that the marked paper was drawn by his wife, Tessie.
