The Giver is written from the perspective of Jonas, an eleven-year-old child who lives in a dystopian society where all suffering, fear, violence, and hatred have been eradicated. Since everyone essentially shares the same appearance and behavior, there is no discrimination and very little competitiveness. Everyone is always courteous. He takes great pride in his work and likes it, working hard to raise kids who will be there for the Ceremony of Names. Even though he is emotionally bonded to a child, he will release it if it seems like the right course of action.
