Characters:

Beowulf

Beowulf, the story’s main character, is a Geatish hero who battles the dragon that breathes fire, the monster Grendel, and Grendel’s mother. Beowulf is the most powerful and skilled warrior in the area, as evidenced by his boasts and encounters. He personifies all the virtues of the heroic culture in his youth. He continues to be a knowledgeable and capable leader in his advanced age.

King Hrothgar

the Danish monarch. Up until Grendel terrorizes his kingdom, Hrothgar enjoys military success and affluence. Hrothgar, a wise and experienced king, depicts a different style of leadership than that of the young warrior Beowulf. He serves as a father figure and role model for Beowulf’s future kingship.

Grendel

Grendel, a demon descended from Cain, preys on Hrothgar’s soldiers in Heorot, the king’s mead hall. Grendel is a perfect fit for the universe of the poem’s ethos of revenge because his cruel and terrible life is a result of God punishing Cain for killing Abel.

Grendel’s mother

Grendel’s mother is an unknown swamp-hag who appears to be less human than Grendel, however, her terrorizing of Heorot is justified by her desire for vengeance—a human goal.
