The setting of The Bean Trees is rural Kentucky. Taylor Greer, the heroine of the book, recalls a time when she was a young girl when Newt Hardbine’s father was catapulted to the top of the Chevron sign after his tractor tire blew. Taylor Greer is initially referred to in the book by her given name, Marietta, or by her nickname, Missy. Taylor has had a fear of tires ever since. Taylor continues by telling the tale of Newt Hardbine, a friend who passed away when Taylor was still in high school.
Taylor was the one to leave small-town life, despite the fact that Newt and Taylor first appeared to be identical children. She managed to do this by avoiding becoming pregnant, securing employment at a hospital, and amassing enough cash to purchase a used Volkswagen bug for herself. Five years after graduating from high school, Taylor bids her mother Alice Greer farewell and finally departs Pittman County, Kentucky.

Characters:
Taylor Greer
Taylor, the book’s main character, also tells a lot of the plot. She is a courageous, strong woman with a sweet, feisty voice. She left her small-town upbringing in rural Kentucky where she was born and reared in order to escape it. She cherishes her Cherokee heritage, much like her mother.
Turtle
Taylor received the child in the heart of the Cherokee country. She was given her moniker because Taylor compared her clinginess to mud turtles in Kentucky. Many people think she is stupid or retarded because of how quiet and uninterested she is. Although Turtle is only three years old, she has already experienced physical and sexual abuse, which is why she is remaining silent. Taylor has spent her entire life trying to avoid getting pregnant, but she still keeps Turtle around.
Lou Ann Ruiz
a mother from Kentucky who moved to Tucson with her child, Dwayne Ray. When the novel opens, her husband, Angel, has just left her, and Taylor and Turtle move in with her. She worries about the tragic mishaps and terrifying tales she hears, worried for her and her child’s safety. She is a survivor but is more sentimental and rural than Taylor.
Mattie
a mother figure to Taylor and the proprietor of Jesus Is Lord Used Tires. She is thoughtful and compassionate. She acts as a sort of sanctuary by letting illegal immigrants reside in her house. Turtle, whose first word is bean and who adores all types of veggies, is inspired by her garden of lovely vegetables and auto parts.
