The matriarch of a poor southern family, Addie Bundren, who is Anse Bundren’s wife, is gravely ill and is likely to pass away shortly. In front of Addie’s bedroom window, Cash, her eldest son, constructs her coffin using all of his carpentry talents. Despite the fact that Addie’s health is fast deteriorating, her other two sons, Darl and Jewel, leave town to bring something for their neighbors, Vernon Tull and the Bundrens, whose wife and two daughters have been taking care of Addie. Addie passes away shortly after Darl and Jewel depart.
Vardaman, the youngest Bundren child, connects his mother’s passing to a fish he had caught and cleaned earlier in the day. Just before dawn, Cash completes the casket with some assistance. As the others sleep, Vardaman bores holes in the lid of the box, two of which pass through his mother’s face, because he is concerned by the fact that his mother is nailed shut inside of it. Dewey Dell, the daughter of Addie and Anse, has recently slept with a local farmhand named Lafe and is now pregnant. She is so worried about her health that she hardly grieves for her mother, who passed away. The next day, a funeral service is held, and while the men converse outside on the porch, the women sing songs inside the Bundren home.

The sight of buzzards over their home informs Darl and Jewel, who narrates the majority of this first section, that their mother has passed away when they return a few days later with Jewel. Darl sarcastically informs Jewel, who is widely regarded as being unappreciative and uncaring, upon seeing this sign that he may be certain his beloved horse is not dead. Despite the fact that burying Addie in Jefferson is far more difficult than doing it at home, Anse feels obligated to carry out Addie’s final request because he promised her that he would do so. Characters:
Addie Bundren
mother of Cash, Darl, Jewel, Dewey Dell, and Vardaman; Anse Bundren’s wife. Despite being the protagonist for the most part, Addie’s passing sets the plot in motion. She is a former schoolteacher who hates her husband and puts all of her love into Jewel, her favorite child, instead of the rest of her family or God because of her bitter, loveless life.
Anse Bundren
the Bundren family’s head. Anse is a hunchbacked, impoverished farmer with immensely selfish inclinations. His children’s varied problems appear to be mostly the result of his poor parenting abilities. Anse, who is alternately despised and mistreated by his children, manages to accomplish his two greatest objectives in one go: burying his deceased wife in her hometown of Jefferson and getting a new set of fake teeth.
Darl Bundren
The following Bundren kid. Of the Bundrens still alive, Darl is the most perceptive and intelligent, and she also provides the majority of the book’s interior monologues. Darl becomes frustrated with the situation as the family experiences disaster after disaster on the journey, and he decides to try to put a stop to it definitively by burning the coffin of his deceased mother.
Jewel
the preacher Whitfield and Addie’s bastard kid. Although Darl seems to comprehend him, Jewel continues to be the book’s biggest mystery and is the least discussed in any of its numerous divisions. Most of his relatives and neighbors mistake Jewel’s intense independence and self-confidence for selfishness. But his intense, brooding personality betrays a genuine love and devotion for his mother, and he develops into a ferocious defender of her casket.
