The storyline starts in the second chapter, which is told in Codi’s first-person perspective. Hallie departs for Nicaragua from Tucson, Arizona, where she had been residing with Codi and Carlo. She intends to help the newly installed communist regime cultivate their crops. Soon after, Codi also departs Tucson and heads back to her sleepy rural village of Grace where she will teach high school biology and take care of her dying father. This Animal Dreams quiz will help you remember certain details.

Since Codi has never had a particularly close relationship with her father and has always felt like an outsider in the community, her homecoming to Grace will be challenging. The ghost of various unsolved mysteries involving Codi and her family’s past resurfaces upon her return home, including the fact that she failed to obtain a medical license while attending medical school, the deaths of her mother and her kid, and the family’s standing in the neighborhood. Codi resides in Grace at the guest house of her friend Emelina Domingos. Codi’s relationship with Loyd Peregrina from high school is exposed as the two women converse. J.T., the husband of Emelina’s friend Loyd, still resides and works in the community. Codi visits Grace once more and is once more overcome by her sense of alienation. Shortly after Hallie was born, Codi and Hallie’s mother passed away. Codi became pregnant at the age of fifteen, gave birth to Loyd’s child, and then miscarried. She kept it a secret. Codi is still unaware that her father, the town doctor, was aware of the circumstance.

Characters:

Codi

the book’s main character and narrator. Codi does not want to love anything for fear of losing it after losing her mother when she was three years old and her unborn child when she was fifteen. She combines a robust sense of independence with a strong yearning to meet someone who will help her find purpose in life. Codi perceives herself as an awkward outsider in Grace and everywhere she goes since she is unsure of her life’s purpose or her relationship to her history. She gradually discovers that in addition to having a lot to give the society, she has always been a cherished member of a big family.

Doc Homer

The second-person third-person narrator’s point of view is that of Codi and Hallie’s father. Doc Homer has spent his entire life working as the only doctor in Grace, but he has never truly felt like one of the community. Doc Homer adores his two daughters despite his stern demeanor and unfriendly demeanor. He loses a lot of his inhibitions as he succumbs to Alzheimer’s disease and is finally able to express at least his concern and empathy for Codi.

Hallie

Younger sister of Codi who departs for Nicaragua at the book’s start. Hallie jokingly refers to herself as “the luckiest person alive” because she not only loves life to the fullest despite her close approach with death. Even though she sees the terrible destruction of land and life in Nicaragua, she finds great joy in working to advance agricultural techniques. Hallie, in contrast to Codi, feels at home anywhere.

Loyd Peregrina

The love interest of Codi. For the land, Loyd would sacrifice his life. Loyd, a Native American who has mixed lineage from the Navajo, Pueblo, and Apache tribes, feels strongly about his heritage. He makes the ideal mate for Codi because of the serene wisdom that comes with his knowledge of the earth and its cycles.

Emelina Domingos

Codi’s childhood pal, who lives in Grace at a guesthouse. Along with her close friend Codi, Emelina is a content mother to her five sons. She lives a straightforward life and is committed to her family and her community, never losing sight of who she is.
