About the quiz
I talk to anybody I want. Nobody bats an eyelid as I walk along the street. I’ve even been the lone white person strolling through a mostly Black urban neighborhood, and all I got was polite banter. I’m sure it wouldn’t have happened the same way if the situation had been reversed.
When I saw my privilege, I began to recognize my stupidity. Before that point, I could have claimed to understand prejudice because I, too, had been followed through a store. However, I was followed through a store since I was a grunge/ punk kid and my attire made me appear suspicious. While I wish it hadn’t happened, clothes are something I can simply remove and change. I could have said that I was familiar with racism since I had been asked to leave a restaurant. But I was told to leave since my friends and I were teenagers and the waitress didn’t think we had enough money to pay for our food. Again, I wish that hadn’t happened, but it was unavoidable. It was a superficial assessment. It wasn’t because of the color of my skin, and to claim that I know what racism is like because of such experiences is naive. I have no concept of what racism is like, and because I am white, I will never know.
