The kids are having a good time. They’re referring to each other as simps. They are either proudly announcing their indoctrination into simphood, or they are vehemently opposed to it.

If you’re perplexed by all of this, it’s possible that it’s not just because you’re old and out of touch with internet culture. I have several pals in their early twenties who are likewise perplexed by all of this simping nonsense, and I wasn’t entirely sure myself. It’s possible because no one understands what the hell it means.

The term simp has been used as an abbreviation for “simpleton” since the early twentieth century, therefore it is not a new online term coined by Gen-Zers. And, even before TikTok, the term was prevalent in black culture, most notably in Three 6 Mafia’s song “Sippin’ On Some Syrup,” which was published in 2000 and begins with the line, “I’m trill working the wheel, a pimp, not a simp / Keep the dope fiends higher than the Goodyear Blimp.” In this usage, the term “simp” refers to the polar opposite of “pimp.” More recently, our OG Hot Girl, rapper Megan Thee Stallion, utilized simp in the same way in her smash song Cash Stuff: “Bitch, I do pimp shit, huh / Ho, you on simp shit, a.”

Are You A Simp quiz

The earliest known definition was added to Urban Dictionary on January 20th, 2005, according to Know Your Meme:

“A guy who goes out with gorgeous girls with the hopes of getting laid.”

However, according to upvotes from Urban Dictionary users, the most frequently acknowledged definition of the phrase is one provided in 2012:

  • A man who places himself in a subservient/submissive position under women in the hopes of winning them over, despite the female bringing nothing to the table.
    – A man who places undue value on women for no reason.
    – A man who takes pleasure in his chivalry in order to obtain sexual gratification from women.
    – A square where the only game is ‘Rolling out the Red Carpet’ for every female.

Of course, there is something to be said for calling out men who assume that being a “good guy” would get them bedded, or, worse, believing that women owe them anything, let alone sexual favors, for not treating them like shit. But that isn’t how the word is being used these days. Also, you must try to play this Are you a simp quiz.

Simp is mainly used by men to mock other guys who pay attention to women or do anything nice for them without expecting sexual benefits in return, such as giving her dinner, consoling her after a breakup, or finishing her homework because she didn’t have “time” (an example the teens on TikTok use a lot).

About the quiz

While many parents are unfamiliar with the phrase “simp,” chances are your tween or teen has used or heard it.
Simp hashtags abound on TikTok. There are almost 350,000 posts on Instagram with the hashtag #simp, and there are Facebook groups dedicated to simps and simping (it can be a verb, too).
Depending on who you ask, there is some disagreement over the word’s current meaning and how much (if any) it has evolved. While simp’s origins can be traced back to the word “simpleton,” its contemporary usage can be traced back to West Coast American rappers like Too Short, who first used it in the mid-1980s in a way that denoted the antithesis of “pimp” in his song “Pimpology.”
Boyz II Men produced a song named “Sympin’ Ain’t Easy” in 1992, spelling the word differently and suggesting unsatisfied yearning.

A simp, according to Urban Dictionary, is “someone who does way too much for a person they admire.” Other definitions on the crowdsourced online dictionary include “a guy who is extremely desperate for women, even if she is a nasty person or has shown her disinterest in him whom he continues to obsess about” and “a guy who puts the hoes before the bros.”

“‘Simp’ is slang for someone (usually a man) who is eager for the attention and affection of someone else (usually a woman),” explained Connor Howlett, 23, a digital strategist for Turner PR in New York City, in an email to CNN.
“Imagine the vitality of puppy dog eyes, but portrayed in a passionate, human form,” Howlett explained. “It’s used in a derogatory way. Though often amusing, there are undoubtedly implications of toxic masculinity because it is associated with displaying too much emotion.”
