You would not expect to find someone preoccupied with evil amid the holy halls of academia (although some students might disagree). But it is evil, or rather the attempt to understand the roots of evil, that intrigues Selmer Bringsjord, a logician, philosopher, and chairman of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s Department of Cognitive Science. He’s so curious that he’s created a sort of checklist for judging whether someone is demonic, and he’s collaborating with a group of graduate students to construct a computational image of a purely wicked individual.

Bringsjord’s research expands on previous definitions proposed by San Diego State University philosophy professor J. Angelo Corlett, as well as late sociopolitical philosophers and psychologists Joel Feinberg and Erich Fromm, but most notably by psychiatrist and author M. Scott Peck in his 1983 book, People of the Lie, The Hope for Healing Human Evil. “I thought it would be intriguing to come up with formal structures that characterize evil and, ultimately, to build a fully wicked character the way a creative writer would,” Bringsjord says after reading Peck’s tome about clinically terrible people.
About the quiz
He and his research team began constructing their computer depiction of evil by asking a series of questions, starting with the basics—name, age, gender, and so on—and progressing to inquiries about this hypothetical person’s ideas and goals.
Whereas the initial E was essentially a computer meant to reply to inquiries by Bringsjord’s description, the researchers have since given E a physical identity: he’s a reasonably young Caucasian man with short black hair and dark stubble on his face. Bringsjord describes E’s appearance as “a meaner version” of Mr. Perry from the 1989 film Dead Poets Society. “He is a magnificent example of evil,” Bringsjord adds, adding that he is not completely content with this personification and may change it.
Of course, human nature is immensely more complex than this. In humans, the terms “good” and “evil” are ambiguous. People can have both ‘good’ and ‘poor’ qualities. Some persons who act harshly and brutally can be reformed and eventually demonstrate ‘positive’ attributes like empathy and kindness. And, rather than being inherent, the majority of cruel or harsh behavior is the result of contextual conditions, such as an abusive childhood or social learning from family or peers.
