HBO offered Clement and McKenzie a tape of Schaal’s standup act, and they concluded after “about 30 seconds” that she would be ideal for the role of Mel, the band’s obsessive admirer. Schaal subsequently stated that the boys sold her character’s concept as correctly as possible, however “they never pitched that she was a stalker, but she’s… plainly a stalker.”

Arj Barker, a comedian, told The Guardian that he met Clement and McKenzie at an Auckland comedy festival in the early 2000s when he was “partying a lot and drinking” and “chasing girls as much as I could.” Clement and McKenzie’s initial impression of Barker inspired the birth of Barker’s character Dave, the ambitious women man. THE FIRST SEASON’S BUDGET WAS TINY.
The first season budget was described as “crazy,” “shoestring,” and “so terrible” by David Costabile (Doug). They shot at an abandoned Lower East Side apartment with no running water or electricity on his first day. Breakfast catering consisted of one box containing ten sandwiches. There was more food by season two.

The documentary Flight of the Conchords: A Texan Odyssey, released in 2006, followed Clement and McKenzie during their time at the SXSW festival, prior to their HBO popularity. A major fan of theirs confessed in the documentary that she kept a picture of Jemaine’s lips in her wallet (the other two pictures were normal ones of her kids). Mel shows Bret the image of Jemaine’s lips she keeps in her wallet in the first episode of the show, “Sally.”

The makeup and costume departments granted Clement permission to roam about the Lower East Side in his costume on the final day of filming the Bowie scenes. He bumped into Schaal, who not only didn’t know her co-star, but also appeared terrified.
