Big Love’s five-season run ended last night with a bang and then a whimper. The show’s last moments addressed almost every plot thread from the previous season, but in such a predictable way that it took some of the pleasure out of the finale. Heather married Ben despite the fact that he named a star after her. Barb preaches at church, Sarah returns to have her baby blessed, and Margene departs on yet another medical-relief cruise. So, congratulations to the Henricksons.

Except for Bill, of course. Bill may not be a prophet, but his death at the hands of his enraged neighbor Carl secures his martyrdom. In this episode, Bill, as paternalistic and arrogant as ever, has a sincere experience during Easter in a church overflowing with polygamists yearning for a spiritual home. He sees his ancestors, including Mrs. Joseph Smith, endorsing his church and crusade. “I felt a grace descend upon me,” he later says to Ben, who is taken aback. Following the Easter themes that pervade the show, Bill — as well as polygamy — are redeemed.

Nicki, on the other hand, was dissatisfied with the resolution. “I don’t have one ounce of the milk of human kindness in me,” she admits to an unsurprised Barb. I’m vindictive, envious, and cruel.” Barb just says, “I know,” and then gives her a hug. But, given that everyone agrees Nicki is a bad person, her existence in the family perplexes us even more. Could someone kindly clarify why Bill married her and why Barb agreed to it? Nicki is a fantastic villain, but that appeared to be her only job. Also, you must try to play this Big Love Series Quiz.

Margene’s joy at Barb’s Midlife Crisis reminded us why she was our favorite wife. She is the character who has evolved the most over the course of five seasons, beginning as a bimbo who matured without losing her joie de vivre. Throughout the series, Marge hated loneliness, befriending Pam early on and always attempting to venture out on her own. And why shouldn’t they? In the climax, she is no older than 23 years old, the age at when most young people discover and forge their adult selves. We’re not sure if Margene Without Borders (great zinger, Nicki) will return to the Henrickson’s permanently, but she’s undoubtedly the happiest member of the family.

Despite the fact that Big Love was about plural marriage, the most important relationship was the one between Barb and Bill. Theirs was the marriage we could identify to, one that strained but never broke. They grew apart as couples do, yet they always returned to the tug of their sealed union. Bill’s obviously unreasonable rage at Barb’s new car was due to the fact that she was trading in their past, the period before polygamy. In his final moments, he asked Barb for her blessing. He restored their friendship by believing in her priesthood.

About the quiz

It’s not often that supporting characters take over a show, but Frank and Lois shone brightly in every scene, and the climax was no exception. Lois, no longer terrified of a lonely eternity, dies in the embrace of her cantankerous boyfriend as he remembers for both of them. Frank and Lois got the happy ending they deserved.

Big Love is the first TV drama (including the megachurch doctrine of 7th Heaven) to center on faith. The writers never criticized their characters’ beliefs, and they avoided the potshots directed against Mormons. Spiritual struggles were honored, such as Dale’s sorrow over his sexuality and Barb’s grief over expulsion. Yes, Big Love got silly a few times – several times in the finale alone! Religion, on the other hand, was never ironic. The show’s most notable achievement was its empathetic, nuanced depiction of faith and the doubt that comes with it.
