I found myself rewatching an episode of Six Feet Under a few months ago in which Brenda (Rachel Griffiths) had a miscarriage the day before her wedding. I was viewing it while investigating how miscarriage is portrayed in popular culture.
I’ve seen a lot of similar depictions during the last few years. But as I watched these specific characters examine the grief and trauma of miscarriage from multiple perspectives, with all the familiar themes of shame, guilt, and blame, I was blown away by what I now think – on second viewing and after seven miscarriages of my own: it is one of the best depictions of miscarriage that I’ve seen on screen. It wasn’t just a plot device to lead you to the next story arc; it was the episode’s gritty, core issue, handled with depth and grace.
Brenda’s awkward interrogation by her mother about why she’s wearing a pad and huge underpants under her gorgeous white wedding gown, and her mother’s later despair that she can’t take away her daughter’s sadness, were both unpleasant details. The doctor has given her several options. And her new spouse has to hold it together, as men all too frequently believe they are obliged to do, before breaking down when no one is looking. I gushed to a friend about how much I’d forgotten how much I enjoyed the show. “It was so ahead of its time in so many ways,” she remarked. I have to agree after re-watching the show from the beginning.
Many of us are familiar with the plot premise: Six Feet Under follows the lives of the Fisher family, who live in and run a funeral house and are thrown into turmoil when the family patriarch, Nathaniel, dies unexpectedly.
There are numerous challenges that we as individuals and as a society do not adequately address. Death must undoubtedly be at the top of the list: the pain, the embarrassment, the uncertainty about what to say, the quiet. So Alan Ball’s decision to stage an entire production in a funeral parlor was quite a risk.
Even more so when each episode of the drama begins with a death. Sometimes the deaths are terrible, sometimes they’re hilariously dark, and sometimes they’re just average. However, it was successful. It continues to do so. I was lured back in after my study and was shocked at how well it has aged – and even improved – 20 years after the first of its five seasons broadcast.
About the quiz

Finally, David’s relationship with Keith is significantly more steady than many of the other characters’ relationships, and the obstacles that the couple faces are dealt with in similarly serious and intelligent ways.
