The Stephen King novel on which the new version of “Firestarter” is based was released in 1980, during a period in the horror master’s career when the writer seemed fascinated by children with unexplainable abilities. Charlie, played by Drew Barrymore in the 1984 film and Ryan Kiera Armstrong in this one, is made of the same stuff as Danny from “The Shining” and the title character from “Carrie”—people who discover they’re not like normal kids. Nothing is more terrifying than an out-of-control child.
Believe me. King’s work would inspire generations—Charlie in “Stranger Things” owes a lot to him, for example—making a remake of this 40-year-old tale of pyromania unavoidable. But, once again, inevitability does not imply creativity. Remakes frequently feel more like contractual obligations than artistic explorations or updates on timeless themes. There’s no better recent example of this than “Firestarter,” a film that goes through the motions with such apathetic predictability and pure cinematic laziness that you might want to set fire to whatever device you’re watching it on. Firestarter 2022 Quiz
This “Firestarter” begins with Charlie at school, rather than on the run, as in the original. Of course, this will result in a brutal display of power. After a few close calls, Charlie rises like a phoenix after a dodgeball incident and sends her emotions into overdrive. The principal and teacher believe the fireball that erupted from the bathroom stall was an explosive device, but mom and dad disagree about what to do next. They, too, have abilities, the result of experiments from an MK Ultra-style program run by something called The Shop. Dad Andy (Zac Efron, and yes, it makes me feel old that Efron can now play a father) has a power called “The Push,” which basically mind control. His daughter’s abilities appear to be amplified and uncontrollable. She even launches a telekinetic attack on her mother, Vicky (Sydney Lemmon). Mom and dad will have to take drastic measures to protect Charlie and themselves. Also, you will find out which Firestarter character are you in this quiz.
The Shop emerges from the shadows after Captain Hollister (Gloria Reuben) summons a bounty hunter who can handle the Charlie situation “with discretion,” a morbid soul named John Rainbird (Michael Greyeyes), who, of course, introduced brooding to emo rock. He arrives at Charlie’s house quickly, but the child is being rewarded for nearly murdering her mother with ice cream, of course. When Charlie and his father return home, they realize how hot it has become for them and flees. Screaming and explosions ensue, as do a few attempts by Dad to teach her how to control her powers. Mostly explosions that appear as tactile as a TikTok filter.
About the quiz
The Blumhouse model is to keep budgets low, but they usually hire directors and production teams who can conceal the cuts with creative filmmaking choices. This time, no. Outside of a cool, ’80s score from John Carpenter, Cody Carpenter, and Daniel Davies, “Firestarter” just looks cheap—in most ways, cheaper than the 1984 version—with no memorable craft elements or decisions. The score deserved to be used more effectively and with tighter visual language in a film. Everything is shot in close-up, boring scenes with flatly written dialogue, and the action is even worse. When things are supposed to get intense, it’s often difficult to figure out what the hell is going on, and director Keith Thomas does a terrible job with geography (largely because of the close-up, reverse shot structure that never puts two people in a frame in a room).
In an odd coincidence, another film about telekinetic kids, “The Innocents,” is out this week in some cities and on VOD, and Stephen King has praised it, probably remembering a time when he, too, was fascinated by unpredictable little monsters. Instead, find a way to watch that one.
