When HBO canceled David Milch’s “Deadwood,” hurting the hearts of millions of fans, the Gem Saloon’s doors closed nearly 13 years ago. For the better part of a decade, whispers of a Deadwood revival lingered as the show’s main players, such as Timothy Olyphant, Ian McShane, and Paula Malcomson, moved on to new projects.

The stars finally aligned in October 2018, allowing Milch and the team to return to South Dakota to tie off a few plot strands left dangling from the sudden cancellation. “Deadwood: The Movie,” Milch’s long-awaited conclusion to his popular series, premieres on HBO on Friday, a full decade after the third season. Let’s get up where we left off.

Editor’s Picks

Ian McShane’s character, Al Swearengen: Al, the owner of Deadwood’s Gem Saloon and a profane poet, is the show’s morally gray core for three seasons. Swearengen recognizes that his business — prostitutes and whiskey — is dependent on town stability, and he has done everything it takes to keep the former mining camp turned prosperous town viable while keeping loyal to those who are devoted to him.

Deadwood Quiz

Timothy Olyphant as Seth Bullock: Seth found himself dragged into the burgeoning town’s numerous power battles after relocating from Montana to Deadwood to start a simple, fresh life, becoming its sheriff and co-owner of a hardware store with his companion Sol Star (John Hawkes). Before the arrival of his wife Martha (Anna Gunn) and stepson William, who died in Season 2, he had a brief romance with Alma Garret (Molly Parker). Also, you must try to play this Deadwood Quiz.

Alma Garret/Ellsworth (Molly Parker): Alma Garret arrived in Deadwood with her wealthy husband, Brom, who was assassinated early in Season 1. Their mining claim became one of the most profitable in the area, making her a target for a slew of predators. She had an affair with Bullock before marrying Whitney Ellsworth (Jim Beaver), the guy in charge of the work on her claim.

Calamity Charlie Utter (Dayton Callie) and Jane (Robin Weigert): These legendary characters first appeared in Deadwood with Wild Bill Hickock (Keith Carradine), but remained long after Hickock’s assassination by the coward Jack McCall (Garret Dillahunt). Jane is a deeply devoted person, but she is also an alcoholic who is prone to emotional outbursts. She eventually fell in love with Joanie Stubbs (Kim Dickens). At times, Utter found himself allied with Bullock, assisting in the maintenance of order in the camp.

About the quiz

Joanie Stubbs (Kim Dickens): When Joanie first arrived in Deadwood, she worked at the Bella Union, a high-end brothel, alongside Cy Tolliver (Powers Boothe, who died in 2017). She attempted to create her own business, Chez Amis, but it resulted in the carnage at the hands of Francis Wolcott (also Garret Dillahunt).

Doc Cochran (Brad Dourif): The village doctor, Cochran is a genuinely moral man who is also completely nonjudgmental. He regularly looks after Al’s girls at the Gem and has had a tiny role in practically every character’s story arc, from treating Alma’s addiction to handling William’s body after his death.

Trixie (Paula Malcomson): One of Al’s most devoted prostitutes, Trixie began a new chapter when she became associated with Sol, working in the bank they built in town while staying devoted to the Gem and Al.
