In the major story arc, Spike is pitted against Vicious, an ambitious criminal linked with the Red Dragon Syndicate, in a deadly competition. They were formerly partners and friends, but when Spike developed an affair with Vicious’s girlfriend and decided to leave the Syndicate, Vicious tried to remove Spike by threatening Julia with death so that she’d kill him. Spike fakes his own death in order to escape the Syndicate, while Julia goes into hiding to protect herself. Julia emerges from hiding and reunites with Spike in the present, with the intention of completing their scheme. After staging a coup and taking control of the Syndicate, Vicious sends hitmen after the duo.
