Feature films with multiple stories aren’t always the happiest of genres, and the reasons for this are typically pretty obvious. Having to end one plot and begin another, over and over, disturbs the dream-like flow that most moviegoers expect from films, for one thing. Second, unevenness is built into the form: some stories will be better than others, possibly more so when multiple filmmakers are involved in a project.

Argentinian “Wild Tales” is a complete surprise because of all of these flaws inherent in it. Thanks to its ability to deftly overcome the form’s usual shortcomings and produce a film that is as amazingly cohesive as it is relentlessly clever and entertaining, the Sony Classics release, which is nominated for this year’s Best Foreign-Language Film Oscar, deserves to become a serious art-house hit in the United States.

Editor’s Picks

Damián Szifron (“The Bottom of the Sea”), the film’s director, has an advantage in that his vision and sensibility are unique. Beyond that, Szifron’s skills as a director and a storyteller are impressive. Mordant black humor permeates all six of the pieces here, which last an average of 20 minutes. Retribution and revenge are important themes in each part. Each segment sets up expectations that the succeeding segment masterfully meets or even exceeds.

Wild Tales quiz

“Wild Tales” opens on a nasty note and ends… well, that’s for you to discover. Argentine anthology delivers a scabrous, often unsettlingly amusing look of human conduct in extreme situations between its shocking opening and equally astonishing conclusion. People are eager to do the worst to one another, whether they’ve been pushed a lot or a little. In drag-down fights that leave them black and blue and sometimes stone-cold dead, they pounce then pummel. Also, you must try to play this Wild Tales quiz.

Isabel (Mara Marull) rollerblades onto an aircraft and into an unexpected reunion in “Wild Tales.” Salgado (Dario Grandinetti) turns out to be her old (never seen) boyfriend. When Salgado, a music critic, was dating his partner, he sat in judgment of him. One of the passengers overhearing their chat says that she, too, was acquainted with the boyfriend.

A nauseating mix of dread and recognition ricochets from face to face as they realize they know the same man.

About the quiz

“Pasternak” is the title of the first story. Model Mara Marull is about to board an aircraft when she discovers that she will not be able to earn frequent flier points for her ticket because someone else purchased it on her behalf. Her ex-girlfriend was Pasternak and the other passenger had condemned his work. They both knew each other because they both knew Pasternak. One of the other passengers tells the other that she has a connection to him. It’s impossible that this is a coincidence. So, what’s going on here, exactly?

He enters the diner. Julia Zylberberg, the waitress, immediately recognizes him as a corrupt official who forced her father to commit suicide before committing suicide herself. Rita Cortese, the diner’s cook, advises that she poison him to get him to stop being nasty. The waitress is in a state of dismay. Cooking sounds so simple, yet it’s clearly immoral… right? This world serves revenge with french fries and fried eggs, however.

A young businessman (Leonardo Sbaraglia) is driving his new sports vehicle through the desert in “The Strongest,” which is by far the most startling of all of the stories. A driver of a dirty pickup truck is insulted by the man as he drives by. A little further along, the motorist has a flat tire and is not amused by his insults. This is exactly what we would want to do if someone pointed a finger at us on the road, and it’s rather frightening to think about.
