In a rare collective vow to lessen the likelihood of such a fight commencing, five of the world’s most powerful nations agreed that “a nuclear war cannot be won and must never be fought.”

The promise was signed by the United States, Russia, China, the United Kingdom, and France, the five nuclear-weapon states recognized by the 1968 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), and the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council. They are referred to as the P5 or the N5.

At a time when Russia, China, and the West are increasingly at odds, such a single stance on a major subject of global security has become increasingly rare. With Moscow threatening to invade Ukraine and China declaring its willingness to use military force against Taiwan, the united statement signals a fresh resolve to avoid a nuclear disaster.

Despite the high-tension situation, a senior US State Department source claimed the statement’s phrasing had been thrashed out over several months at P5 meetings.

“At the most basic level, I believe it’s significant to be able to say that this is how we think about these dangers, and this is a recognition that it’s something we want to avoid, particularly during a difficult moment,” the official added.

“We declare that a nuclear war cannot be won and must never be fought,” the statement added, repeating Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev’s joint declaration during a summit in Geneva in 1985.

Make a plan before a threat arises.
Everything begins with forethought. If you already have a readiness mindset, you’re probably well on your way. It’s never too late to start planning if you haven’t already! Taking action now could save your life and the lives of your loved ones in the case of a nuclear assault or perhaps a full-fledged nuclear war.

Your strategy will mostly concern the storage of food, water, medical supplies, and so forth. These will let you stay several days indoors, sealed off from the outside radiation.

This strategy should also include selecting a room in your home to serve as a shelter-in-place. This should be the location that provides the most radiation shielding for you and your family. Families who have a designated shelter in place rooms have a far better chance of survival.

About the quiz

Decide where you want to reside based on your potential aims.
To dramatically boost your chances of surviving a nuclear assault, avoid regions that present targets of opportunity or strategic importance. Strategic missile sites and military bases, government centers such as Washington, DC and capitals, transit hubs, and communication centers are examples of these places.

Value is also sought after in manufacturing, industrial, technical, and financial hubs, as well as refineries, power plants, and chemical facilities.
Food that will not spoil should be stored.
Most solid preparedness plans include long-term food storage. Rice, beans, honey, powdered milk, wheat, sugar, oats, and pasta are all excellent starting points for food storage.

You can get a jump start on food storage by purchasing in bulk. A 50-pound bag of rice, for example, costs about $15-20 and contains about 30,000 calories. A 20-pound package of pinto beans costs roughly the same and contains slightly more than 30,000 calories. For $30-40, you can get enough food for a family of four for a week! If you absolutely needed to, you could stretch it out even further.

Make sure you remember to include food for any pets.

Keep water on hand for yourself and your family.
A gallon of water each day, per person, is a decent starting point. As long as it is kept away from sunlight and at room temperature, ordinary tap water will last for a long time without needing to be treated. Algae cannot grow in the container as a result of this.
Make sure your pets have access to water as well. The amount of water they require will be determined by their size.
