Animation from Australia in which the same scene may be both sickly-cute and disturbingly horrific at the same time. They become penpals after Mary’s chance encounter with a telephone directory, and their letters soon become the emotional lifeline for both of their miserable lives. All of this is drawn in claymation, which is almost entirely monochrome.

Writer-director Adam Elliot adds many a joke and impressively leftfield (and primarily insect-related) detail. In addition to Toni Collette, Barry Humphries, and Philip Seymour Hoffman, he’s assembled an outstanding voice cast for the film. At one point, Mary is gushing about her favorite TV show; at another, we’re being given a lecture on Asperger’s syndrome. Elliott’s ambition is admirable, despite his seeming inability to determine whether he is laughing with or at his works.

Editor’s Picks

Mary and Max is, to put it mildly, an interesting and difficult-to-describe film. According to the broad strokes: An eight-year-old girl in Australia with a mostly absent father and an oppressive mother scans through the phone book at the post office and writes a letter to a random New Yorker named Max Jerry Horovitz. This letter marks the beginning of an intercontinental friendship that would last for decades.

This is the kind of companionship that Max and Mary both sorely require. “Chocolate hot dog”-eating Max spends his days sweeping up litter and attending Overeaters Anonymous support groups between binges of “poop-looking” birthmark Mary at home and at school. It’s true that “Mary and Max” has a lot of odd gloom, but it only serves to highlight the film’s, melancholy heart.

A major scene in the film is Max’s revelation of his disease. This sets Mary’s life’s mission in motion (which is similar to Elliot’s real-life passion for informing people about the disease). Also, you must try to play this Mary and Max quiz.

Elliot’s clever handling of “Mary and Max’s” bigger topics, on the other hand, makes the film stand out. If you’re expecting a Disney-style happy ending in the third act, you’ll be disappointed.

Mary Daisy Dinkle (Bethany Whitmore) is an eight-year-old Australian girl who lives a lonely existence in Mount Waverley. Her absentee father and alcoholic/kleptomaniac mother provide little assistance at home. Only her beloved rooster Ethel and her favorite snack sweetened condensed milk provide her with solace, as does a cartoon show similar to The Smurfs titled The Noblets.

A forty-four-year-old Jewish man with Asperger’s syndrome, Max Horowitz lives alone after losing his father and witnessing his mother’s suicide. His days are filled with loneliness. Goldfish, parakeet, and a cat who was wounded in the eye with an air rifle are among the undesirable pets he shares his New York City apartment with, along with an invisible buddy known as Mr. Ravioli. When it comes to littering, he is anti-littering since he cares about the environment. Max also wears a yarmulke and invented chocolate hot dogs, both of which are popular in Jewish communities.

About the quiz

Melodrama Pictures and Melanie Coombs produced Mary and Max, a 2009 Australian stop-motion animated comedy-drama film by Adam Elliot, his debut animated feature film. Philip Seymour Hoffman, Toni Collette, Eric Bana, and Bethany Whitmore provided the voices, with Barry Humphries providing the narration.

Maxim understands that Mary is human, and sends her a parcel of his Noblet figurine collection as an act of forgiveness after nearly strangling a homeless guy (Ian “Molly” Meldrum) for tossing away an unlit cigarette. As a result of Damien’s departure, Mary has become depressed and has been unable to find the parcel for several days. Upon discovering some Valium that had belonged to her mother, Mary chooses to take her own life.

Len comes on her door as she takes the Valium and is on the approach of hanging herself, having overcome his agoraphobia in order to alert her of Max’s delivery. A letter from Max explains that he has come to see that the Noblet figurines aren’t ideal, and he offers his forgiveness. Also, he expresses how much he values their friendship and hopes their paths may intersect one day.

Mary finally visits Max in New York a year later, when she brings her infant kid with her. After Mary enters Max’s apartment, she finds him sitting on his couch, staring upward with a smile on his face. Max had died earlier that day.
