A love affair for Generation X has rarely been depicted so tenderly, sweetly, and gently as in Richard Linklater’s “Before Sunrise,” except that Jesse and Celine are outside their generation and its obsession with boredom.
In this film, there is no secret agenda at play. Betraying, melodrama, fake violence, and fancy choreography will not be included in sex scenes. As they roam the streets of Vienna from mid-afternoon until morning, they largely talk. No one bothers them.
As I watched “Before Sunrise,” I was reminded of real talks I’d had with more or less identical wording.

They’re both in their 20s, and they’re both married. A cable channel with 24-hour documentaries on people’s real lives in different parts of the world is his idea, and he tells her about it. She talks about a visit she had with her grandmother during that time period. Afterward, Jesse tells the story of his childhood vision of his grandmother, who had died. Celine agrees to meet him at the Vienna train station when he begs her to.
Following Slacker and Dazed and Confused, filmmaker Richard Linklater illustrates how two people may reach out to each other and express themselves via talk in this captivating and well-realized picture. I hope this film marks a trend of more intriguing dialogue between men and women on the screen, as Whit Stillman’s Barcelona did.

Fortunately for him, Jesse’s luck is about to turn around. A French student returning to Paris, Celine (Julie Delpy), is on her way back to Paris when he encounters her on the train as he approaches Vienna. Within a short period of time, these strangers on a train begin exchanging stories. They share their dreams and secrets and offer their opinions on relationships, mortality, and romance.
Because his flight doesn’t leave until the next day, Jesse makes an audacious request: “Get off the train here with me.” There are many places in the city where we can go and see things while conversing with others. I’ll be leaving in the morning, but at least we’ve had a good time together.
